PANHANDLING IN SCHAUMBURG
The Schaumburg Police Department has received an increased number of concerns regarding people panhandling. Although the village previously had an ordinance that could be enforced to regulate such activity, court rulings do not allow the village to enforce it. This is an issue that law enforcement officers are experiencing across the state.

The police department social services unit has worked to assist some panhandlers who are experiencing homelessness or other issues. Financial assistance is also available to people experiencing true crisis. However, many of the people panhandling in the area are part of organized groups that conduct this activity for a living. Some will even use small children to evoke sympathy and encourage more donations. These people do not want assistance and often will refuse to speak with Schaumburg officers or social workers.

To address this problem, the village encourages the community not to give money to people panhandling. Rather, if you come across someone in need, please contact the village social services unit by dialing 311 in Schaumburg or call (847) 895-4500 outside of Schaumburg. Trained, professional social workers will assess the person’s situation and ensure they get the help they need.

For those who would like to provide financial assistance as a means to help individuals in the community, please consider the following village-maintained programs:

  • Donate to Neighbors Helping Neighbors to help those who are going through challenging financial times and are at risk of having their water shut off.
  • Donate to the Community Assistance Fund that assists individuals with homeless/housing and general crisis needs.
