FAHRRAD BIKE TOUR JUNE 5
The Village of Schaumburg encourages the public to celebrate Bike Month, which is being recognized by the village in June.

The popular Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg returns and is open to the public. The event, which is sponsored by the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District, will kick off at noon on Sunday, June 5 from the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center Plaza, 101 Schaumburg Ct. Participants will ride in a 5-mile police-escorted tour, utilizing both on and off-street bike paths throughout neighborhoods and parks surrounding the Municipal Center.

Immediately following the ride, a picnic-style lunch will be served. Participants will be able to eat their lunch safely distanced on the Municipal Center grounds. Before participating, all riders must register online and sign a liability waiver on the park district’s website. Helmets are encouraged. Beginners and riders with training wheels are advised not to participate.

ACTIVE SHOOTER PREPAREDNESS & TRAINING RESOURCES
The Schaumburg Police and Fire Departments are trained and equipped to deal with active shooter incidents. Officers, Firefighters, and Emergency Medical Personnel have done classroom, tactical, scenario and full-scale training exercises to prepare for such an event. This training is ongoing and includes police and fire departments for surrounding jurisdictions that would likely be called for assistance. Police officers are equipped with special weapons, first-aid supplies, and special tools to better respond to active shooters. Police and Emergency Medical Personnel also have special ballistic protection that can be used to better protect them when responding. Although tactics may vary on every incident, the primary goal is to end the threat to innocent people as soon as possible. Schaumburg is part of a large multi-jurisdictional Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that would be dispatched to an active shooter event. However, every officer is trained to immediately respond to an active shooter before the arrival of such teams. Our public safety personnel are prepared to put their lives in danger to protect our community.

The police department also offers training to community members, businesses, and other organizations on how to best prepare and respond to an active shooter incident. For more information on training sessions, please contact Lt. Scott Tillema in the Schaumburg Police Department’s Training Division at (847) 348-7343.

BILL CLARK RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Congratulations to Schaumburg’s very own Bill Clark for receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association (IESMA) for his many years of enhancing emergency management. Clark is the definition of public service and someone who has devoted a lifetime to making the community safer. After a long career with the Elk Grove Fire Department where he retired as Deputy Chief, Clark came to Schaumburg in the Fire Prevention Bureau and took over as emergency management coordinator where he dedicated himself to pushing the standards of emergency management. As part of his role, he made significant advances in partnering with neighboring jurisdictions and special districts, many of which play a major role in the emergency management program today. In 2020, Clark retired from his position with the Village of Schaumburg but still remains a dedicated volunteer in Schaumburg.

“Bill is a wealth of knowledge and has served in the emergency management capacity officially and unofficially since before the term emergency management was widely adopted. People like Bill helped to shape what emergency management is in Illinois, leading the way in cross community coordination before it was a national standard. I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive a lifetime achievement award in the field of emergency management from this association.” – Jim Walters, Schaumburg Fire Chief.
