MARCH IS SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS MONTH
|
Did you know March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month? Even though severe weather can happen at any time of the year, Severe Weather Preparedness Month serves as a helpful reminder of the importance of preparing you and your family for potential weather emergencies. Plan ahead and consider taking the following actions:
- Create an emergency plan.
- Identify nearby, sturdy buildings close to where you live, work, study, and play in case you need to seek shelter.
- Cut down or trim trees that may be in danger of falling on your home.
- Consider buying surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system to protect your home, appliances, and electronic devices.
- Frequently monitor weather updates and have multiple ways to receive alerts.
- Know the difference between a tornado watch and a warning. A watch indicates that a tornado is possible and to continue monitoring alerts. A warning indicates that a tornado is happening or imminent and to immediately take shelter.
- Schaumburg residents who have a special health need and/or require transportation assistance are encouraged to sign up for the Special Needs Registry, which notifies police and fire departments that special evacuation assistance is required in the event of an emergency. Visit the village’s website for more information and to sign up.

GET TO KNOW TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR SIDNEY KENYON
The village is pleased to announce it recently welcomed Sidney Kenyon as its newest Director of the Transportation Department on Feb. 20.
Tell us about your background.
I was born and raised in Chicagoland and grew up in Oak Park. I hold a Master of Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and am a certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners. At UIC, my coursework concentrations were in transportation and economic development. Much of my work experience has been on behalf of counties—including DuPage and McHenry—but I have also had stops at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeastern Illinois while in graduate school. Most recently, I served as the Senior Transportation Planner in the DuPage County Division of Transportation.
Why did you want to become Schaumburg’s Transportation Director?
Schaumburg is a focal point of activity in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the amount of planning and coordination required to keep things humming along means there is no shortage of work to do. I feel lucky to work in a dynamic environment where thoughtful planning is the village’s motto. I have heard positive things about the staff and Village Board, and I look forward to working with everyone to serve the community. I am enthusiastic about getting back into transit planning and supporting the continuation of activities at the Schaumburg Regional Airport.
What are some fun facts about you?
I live in Villa Park with my wife, Katie, and son. I also have a dog that knows how to high-five. My interest in urban planning started after playing the city-building simulation game Sim City. In my free time, I love to cook. I have an offset smoker and am always looking for good grilling recipes. However, nothing I cook will ever outdo my wife’s lattice-crust apple pie.
