SCHAUMBURG VOICES OPPOSITION ON STATE SALES TAX PROPOSAL
|
Schaumburg Village President Tom Dailly recently sent a letter to Schaumburg’s state senators and legislators voicing strong opposition to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposal to eliminate the state's current 1% sales tax on food, drugs, and medical appliances – a measure that would result in an estimated decrease of $3.4 million in annual revenues for Schaumburg.
Revenues from the 1% grocery tax are dedicated solely to municipal governments, not the State of Illinois. The significant decrease in revenue would limit Schaumburg’s ability to maintain and improve essential infrastructure, provide quality public services, and support vital community programs. Local government is already facing financial burdens imposed by large mandates such as public pension contributions and body camera implementation, among others, and the elimination of the grocery tax would negatively impact the quality of life for Schaumburg residents.
The Illinois Municipal League estimates the proposal, if approved, would result in an estimated loss of $325 million statewide that will impact local governments.
Residents are encouraged to contact their state legislators and the Governor and urge them to oppose the elimination of the 1% grocery sales tax being proposed in the state budget and maintain critical funding necessary for local government operations. ROUNDABOUT DESIGN ADDED TO BRAINTREE DRIVE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
|
At the March 12 meeting, the Village Board approved adding a compact roundabout to the preliminary design of the Braintree Drive reconstruction project. The roundabout would be located at the intersection of Braintree Drive and Weathersfield Way. As proposed, the project would reconstruct Braintree Drive from Weathersfield Way to Wise Road and would also include enhancements for cyclists and pedestrians.
During the intersection evaluation process, staff performed a roundabout feasibility study that evaluated crash history, intersection geometry, and traffic impacts at Braintree Drive and Weathersfield Way. As a result of those analyses, staff concluded that a roundabout would offer an effective solution. Over the past five years, angled collisions have been the primary type of crash at this intersection. By introducing a roundabout, the likelihood of future accidents will be reduced, thereby improving safety. Additionally, motorists can anticipate an average decrease in delay time of 5.5 seconds across all approaches. The feasibility study also confirmed that the compact roundabout can be constructed within the existing right-of-way and can accommodate emergency vehicles.
Proposed safety enhancements accompanying the roundabout are still under development, but the final design will balance the goals of ensuring safety for all users, preserving navigability, and maximizing performance. Follow the village on Facebook, Nextdoor and X (formerly Twitter) if you are looking to foster or adopt your next best friend - or if you just need an extra dose of cuteness.
