RESIDENTIAL PERMITS FOR SPRING PROJECTS
With spring finally here, you may start planning repairs and projects for your home. The village's Community Development Department offers a friendly reminder that permits are required for work to add or alter features to your property such as fences, patios, decks, sidewalks, driveways, and sheds. For a list of work that requires a permit and what each permit will require at the time of submittal, review the Residential Permit Resource Guide.
The village recently released a new online residential permit application portal that allows users to conveniently submit the required project information electronically for each permit type. The applicant is provided the ability to see the status of their application, schedule inspections, and communicate directly with staff all within the online portal. If you are ready to apply, begin the Residential Building Permit Application.
Express permits are also available for projects that do not require a plan review. Express permits are limited to the following residential projects: roofing, siding, air conditioners, furnaces, water heaters, sewer repairs, plumbing, some electric work, and temporary storage. For these permits, visit the Express Permit Application.
Questions on whether or not a permit is needed? Contact the Permit Services Division at (847) 923-4420.

DEMONSTRATIONS AND PROTESTS IN SCHAUMBURG
Periodically, the village is contacted by a concerned resident regarding protest activity that is occurring in the community. The resident may express concerns with the message of the protestors or the manner in which they are protesting.
The First Amendment protects citizens right to peacefully assemble and, generally, all types of expression are constitutionally protected in traditional "public forums" such as streets, sidewalks and parks. As such, public demonstrations and protests may take place in public spaces like sidewalks as long as pedestrian traffic is not obstructed and local laws are followed.
The Schaumburg Police Department often is aware of planned protests and other such demonstrations and, whenever possible, works proactively with organizers to ensure safe and peaceful demonstrations. This collaboration does not represent an endorsement or approval of the protest activity, or the message being conveyed.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the police department prior to a planned event. The police generally remind organizers and participants that they are allowed to peacefully gather but must do so in public areas in which they do not block access to private properties or businesses or obstruct public sidewalks and streets.
The mission of the Schaumburg Police Department is to “serve, protect, and enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors to the Village of Schaumburg.” The village’s dedicated officers have been trained to safely address activities related to protests and rallies and will continue to work closely with members of the community – both businesses and individuals – to address concerns.

SCHAUMBURG CONTINUING NEW MODEL OF PROVIDING COUNSELING SERVICES
For many years, the village offered Schaumburg residents counseling services through its Family Counseling Center (FCC), located at 17 E. Schaumburg Rd. Village staff identified a trend that showed the center was primarily providing services to residents who were insured and could attain therapy services through private practitioners.
In the fall of 2023, the village began a trial period to change the way it provides counseling services to residents in need. Rather than operating similarly to private practices, the village began focusing resources on therapeutic mental health services, specifically for those with a direct connection to police calls for service. The core of this service model allows social service workers to respond, as often as practical, with patrol officers to police calls for service involving individuals with mental health or other crisis-related issues. This approach offers safe and effective de-escalation options, immediate counseling, and therapeutic and resource referral services. It also expedites the process for mental health follow-up, whether that be through continued counseling and therapy with the village's staff or a referral for contracted services.
At its March 12 Village Board meeting, Schaumburg officials approved a measure to permanently close the FCC and continue offering counseling services to clients in need who may be referred by the police department’s social services unit. The village will also continue to contract with Owens and Associates for residents who may be uninsured or underinsured and need independent counseling and therapeutic services that would have previously been provided through the Family Counseling Center.
For more information on the services provided to the public, dial 311 in Schaumburg or call (847) 895-4500 and ask to be connected to one of the village's social workers or visit the website.
