CYCLIST & PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
|
|
|
|
The village would like to remind cyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and be mindful of motorists to help prevent accidents from occurring.
- Know and follow all traffic safety laws. Review the 2022 Rules of the Road.
- Follow crosswalk regulations. Wait until all vehicle traffic is stopped prior to crossing.
- Never assume a motorist, pedestrian or cyclist can hear or see you. Proceed with caution. Cyclists should use horns, whistles, and bells to signal to others they are approaching.
- Cyclists should ride in designated bike lanes or on bike paths. If riding on the roadway, always travel with the flow of traffic and ride on the right side of the road, as far to the right as practical and safe.
- If you bicycle or walk on the sidewalk, be careful as you pass driveways and other roadway openings and intersections. Watch for vehicles pulling out or turning.
- Consider wearing neon or flourescent colors or other lighted items to remain visible. Install reflectors and/or lights on your bicycle and avoid riding at night.
- For everyone's safety, do not text while walking or riding a bike, wear earbuds or headphones, or use any device that reduces your situational awareness.
- Cyclists should state their intentions by using hand signals (see graphic above).
