VILLAGE OF SCHAUMBURG CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY
On April 26, Village President Tom Dailly and village officials celebrated Arbor Day alongside nearly 160 students and teachers from Hale Elementary School. Mayor Dailly and village Forester Frank Calvello spoke to students about how trees help create healthy communities. Afterward, staff from the village’s Engineering and Public Works Department planted a new tree on the school’s property with the helping hands of several students. Each student was sent home with their own sapling to plant at home.
The Village of Schaumburg was recently named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 18th year in a row. Schaumburg has achieved its Tree City USA status by continuing to meet the program’s four core requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The village also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to sustainable urban forest management. Learn more about Tree City USA online.

GROW HEALTHY TREES WITH PROPER MULCHING
Mulch isn't just a decorative touch for your garden; it's a powerhouse of benefits for your plants and trees. Mulch reduces water loss from the soil, minimizes weeds, and improves soil structure. Mulch also provides a finishing touch to a landscape. However, improper use of mulch can lead to root rot, diseases and micronutrient deficiencies.
To maximize the powers of mulch in your landscaping, follow these tips:
- Place a 2-4 inch layer of mulch 3-4 inches from tree trunks and shrubs to create a mulch circle. The mulch should resemble a donut or bowl to allow water to soak directly into the root area.
- Avoid creating a mulch volcano. Covering the root flare at the base of the trunk with mulch can cause stress to the tree or plant, leading to root rot and other issues.
- To reap the true benefits of mulch, choose an organic mulch such as wood chips, hardwood/softwood bark, cocoa hulls, or leaves/compost mixtures. Many inorganic mulches, like stone or lava rocks, do not provide the benefits that an organic mulch provides.

| PROPERTY MAINTENANCE REMINDERS | |

The codes and regulations are enforced by the village to preserve residential properties, provide a safe environment and maintain property values. With summer approaching, the village reminds residents of some ordinances related to property maintenance:
- Maintain lawn below 8 inches in height. Trim bushes and shrubs.
- Watering and sprinkling is prohibited between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day.
- Brush pickup is underway. Visit the website for schedule and details.
- Promptly remove dead trees and shrubs from your property.

Residents who may see property maintenance issues in their neighborhood can report it by submitting a Customer Service Request (CSR). CSRs can be submitted by dialing 311 in the village or by visiting the website.

Recycle Textiles with Simple Recycling | Are you wondering what to do with clothing, towels, or other textiles that have reached the end of their useful life? Avoid sending them to the landfill and give textiles new life by using the free textile recycling program, Simple Recycling. Clothing and textiles require a lot of resources to make, including water, fertilizer, and pesticides for growing natural fibers like cotton, as well as petroleum to make synthetic fibers. When we reuse and recycle textiles, it conserves these resources and keeps items out of the trash, which is good for the environment. Simple Recycling provides free pickup services, which can be scheduled online or by calling (866) 835-5068. For more information, visit the website.
