CYCLIST AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Whether it’s Schaumburg’s Bike Month activities or the warmer days that have you back outside, the village would like to remind cyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and be mindful of motorists to help prevent accidents from occurring.

  • Know and follow all traffic safety laws. Review the 2024 Rules of the Road.
  • Follow crosswalk regulations. Wait until all vehicle traffic is stopped prior to crossing.
  • Cyclists should ride in designated bike lanes or on bike paths. If riding on the roadway, always travel with the flow of traffic and ride on the right side of the road, as far to the right as practical and safe.
  • Never assume a motorist, pedestrian or cyclist can hear or see you. Proceed with caution. Cyclists should use horns, whistles, and bells to signal to others they are approaching.
  • If you bicycle or walk on the sidewalk, be careful as you pass driveways and other roadway openings and intersections. Watch for vehicles pulling out or turning.
  • Consider wearing neon or fluorescent colors or other lighted items to remain visible. Install reflectors and/or lights on your bicycle and avoid riding at night.
  • For everyone's safety, do not text while walking or riding a bike, wear earbuds or headphones, or use any device that reduces your situational awareness.
  • Cyclists should state their intentions by using hand signals (see graphic above).

Share Your Input with Metra

To assist with its evolution toward a regional rail service model – which calls for service throughout the day rather than prioritizing peak morning and evening trains – Metra is asking riders about their current and future needs. The survey is available on Metra's website and will be open through June 19.

Metra anticipates another round of public outreach in early 2025 to give the public and key stakeholders the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed service concepts. Stay tuned to Metra's website for more details as they become available.

RULES OF THE ROAD REMINDER - PASSING AND LANE USAGE

You must drive on the right half of the roadway except:

  • When passing another vehicle moving in the same direction on a two-lane highway, interstate highway or controlled freeway.
  • When a blockage makes it necessary to drive to the left of the center line. You may drive on the left after yielding to oncoming traffic.
  • On a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic.
  • On a one-way street with two or more lanes of traffic.
  • When approaching a stationary emergency vehicle or disabled vehicle on the side of the highway.
  • When roadway construction is located in or in close proximity to the right lane or right shoulder.

When driving on an interstate highway or full access controlled freeway, a driver may not drive in the left lane(s), except when passing another vehicle. Exceptions include when:

  • No other vehicle is directly behind the vehicle being driven in the left lane.
  • Traffic conditions/congestion make it impractical to drive in the right lane.
  • Weather conditions make it necessary to use the left lane(s).
  • There is an obstruction or hazard in the right lane.
  • The driver is changing lanes to yield to emergency or construction vehicles

To view additional information regarding driving in Illinois, please visit the 2024 Illinois Rules of the Road.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

National Parkway Reconstruction

The stamped pavement portion of the roundabout was poured this week, which signals concrete work is nearly complete on the project. The roadway stone on the north leg of National Parkway is being fine graded in preparation for the asphalt binder. The electricians are installing wiring for the proposed roadway lighting. Once the roadway binder is paved, the remaining driveway aprons, sidewalks, and bike path will be installed.

For more information on the village's construction projects, view the Construction Dashboard.

Rodenburg Road Reconstruction & Resurfacing

The majority of the storm sewer installation is complete. Next week, crews will begin installing drainage lids and covers as concrete curb installation begins. Crews will continue to shape the ground for the new roadway and install the stone base for the new pavement. Please note that both the roadway and pedestrian path are closed to traffic, including walkers and bicyclists.

For more information and to sign up for project updates, visit the project website.
