CYCLIST AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Whether it’s Schaumburg’s Bike Month activities or the warmer days that have you back outside, the village would like to remind cyclists and pedestrians to stay alert and be mindful of motorists to help prevent accidents from occurring.
- Know and follow all traffic safety laws. Review the 2024 Rules of the Road.
- Follow crosswalk regulations. Wait until all vehicle traffic is stopped prior to crossing.
- Cyclists should ride in designated bike lanes or on bike paths. If riding on the roadway, always travel with the flow of traffic and ride on the right side of the road, as far to the right as practical and safe.
- Never assume a motorist, pedestrian or cyclist can hear or see you. Proceed with caution. Cyclists should use horns, whistles, and bells to signal to others they are approaching.
- If you bicycle or walk on the sidewalk, be careful as you pass driveways and other roadway openings and intersections. Watch for vehicles pulling out or turning.
- Consider wearing neon or fluorescent colors or other lighted items to remain visible. Install reflectors and/or lights on your bicycle and avoid riding at night.
- For everyone's safety, do not text while walking or riding a bike, wear earbuds or headphones, or use any device that reduces your situational awareness.
- Cyclists should state their intentions by using hand signals (see graphic above).

Share Your Input with Metra
To assist with its evolution toward a regional rail service model – which calls for service throughout the day rather than prioritizing peak morning and evening trains – Metra is asking riders about their current and future needs. The survey is available on Metra's website and will be open through June 19.
Metra anticipates another round of public outreach in early 2025 to give the public and key stakeholders the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed service concepts. Stay tuned to Metra's website for more details as they become available.
