VILLAGE OF SCHAUMBURG CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY
On April 28, Village President Tom Dailly and village officials celebrated Arbor Day alongside students from Campanelli Elementary School. Staff from the village’s Engineering and Public Works Department planted a new tree on the school’s property and helped educate the students on how trees help create healthy communities.
Did you know the Village of Schaumburg has been named a 2022 Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation, which honors the village's commitment to its urban forest management? The village also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and an outstanding level of tree care.
Schaumburg has achieved its Tree City USA status by meeting the program’s four core requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

RECOGNIZING MONARCH MONTH
Did you know May is Monarch Month? In recent years, both the western and eastern monarch butterfly populations have declined significantly. The Village of Schaumburg signed the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge and has officially committed to taking meaningful action to protect monarchs - the state insect of Illinois. Schaumburg residents can make a difference by planting native milkweed and nectar plants in their yards to create a habitat for monarchs and other pollinators. Native planting of this kind reduces stormwater, emissions and pesticide/fertilizer runoff and provides wildlife corridors that are permitted by the village's landscape and screening code. Free milkweed seed packets will be available for pickup at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center throughout the month of May, or while supplies last.
For more information on how to get involved with monarch conservation efforts in Schaumburg, visit the Spring Valley website or call (847) 985-2100. For questions, contact Landscape and Sustainability Planner Martha Dooley or dial 311 in Schaumburg.

This year’s conference theme was Understanding and Fighting Basement Fires, which addressed the dangers basement fires present to first responders. While basement fires are not as common as above‐ground fires in Schaumburg, the level of danger associated with them is immense, which is why providing first responders with helpful safety information to attack these fires is extremely beneficial to ensure the safety of everyone. Weather Advisory/Watch/Warning - What's the Difference?
Do you know the difference between a weather advisory, watch, and warning? It is essential to know these terms so you can take proper action in inclement weather.
- Advisory - The condition is occurring, imminent, or likely, but is more informational and not severe.
- Watch - The condition is possible within a large area and a long time frame, and people should be prepared to take action.
- Warning - The condition is occurring, imminent, or likely within a smaller area and a shorter time frame and poses a threat to life or property.
Be sure to have multiple methods of receiving emergency alerts, such as major television networks, weather apps on your phone, and wireless emergency alerts (WEA). For more information, contact Public Education Officer Tony Piccolo or dial 311 in Schaumburg.
