PUMPKIN COMPOSTING DROP-OFF EVENT UNDERWAY
The Schaumburg Engineering and Public Works Department is partnering with Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) to offer a more sustainable way to dispose of your pumpkins after Halloween. From Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3, area residents are invited to drop off their pumpkins for composting in the designated boxes located in the parking lots of two convenient locations:
- Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Ct.
- Schaumburg Police Department, 1000 W. Schaumburg Rd.
Residents are asked to remove any non-compostable materials such as glitter, candle wax and any other plastic before dropping off their pumpkins. There’s no limit on the number of pumpkins you can bring, and this free, drop-and-go event is open to the public.
Composting pumpkins not only helps keep waste out of landfills, but it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and conserves water – all of which makes a positive environmental impact. INTERGENERATIONAL GARDEN PRODUCES 621.5 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE
The Intergenerational Garden, which is located at The Barn, 231 S. Civic Dr., is coming to a close for the season. This year, volunteers harvested 621.5 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits that were distributed to seniors. Gardeners were even able to enjoy sweet watermelons and cantaloupes that they produced themselves.
To enhance the garden, the Engineering and Public Works Landscape Division replaced the garden's original 12-year-old fence, and created a washing and drying station that includes a sink with a spray-nozzle attachment and drying rack. The new station helps keep dirt out of the senior center, and by utilizing village staff's creativity and knowledge of carpentry, these projects were completed in-house.
Thank you to all senior volunteers and Village of Schaumburg staff from various departments for their efforts in helping with this essential and appreciated resource. For more information on senior programming at The Barn, visit the village's website.

Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries | As a reminder, Daylight Saving Time will end at 2 a.m. this Sunday, Nov. 3. Remember to "fall back" by turning your clocks back one hour. The Schaumburg Fire Department also reminds residents this is an ideal time to check the batteries in household smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If the alarm chirps, the battery is low and needs to be replaced right away.
