PROPERTY TAX LEVY
Village officials approved a measure at its Oct. 26 Village Board meeting to maintain the village’s property tax levy at the same amount that was levied in 2019 and 2020.

Since 2009, the village has had a property tax levy—which has been reduced or maintained every year—to fund costs associated with police and fire operations, principal and interest payments on one outstanding bond issue—which was paid in full in 2019 thereby reducing the levy by $1 million—and to make required contributions into the police and firefighters’ pension funds. Each year the village’s fiscal condition is assessed to determine if the levy can be reduced further. Due to a $570,000 increase in required police and fire pension contributions and continued pandemic-related impacts on certain village revenues, the village is proposing to maintain its property tax levy at the same amount that was levied in 2020. The total amount of the levy is $19,479,582. The tax levy ordinance is anticipated to be approved at the Dec. 14 Village Board meeting.

OUTSTANDING CITIZEN AWARD CEREMONY
Last week, the Village of Schaumburg recognized Mary Ann Belmonte with the Outstanding Citizen Award for assisting a neighbor in need who had fallen at home. Belmonte often volunteers time with her church driving parishioners to appointments and errands. In August, she arrived at the home of an 81-year-old resident, who lives alone and is no longer able to drive, to transport her to a local restaurant. Upon receiving no answer at the door, Belmonte called out to the resident and was able to hear calls for help from inside the home. She immediately dialed 911 and when paramedics arrived, they discovered the resident had fallen in her living room approximately 10 hours before and was unable to move or reach the phone to call for help. Without Belmonte’s intervention, this situation could have easily become life-threatening.

The village commends Mary Ann Belmonte for going above and beyond to look out for her fellow citizens and neighbors.
