THE VILLAGE MOURNS AND REMEMBERS THOSE LOST THIS WEEK | This week was a time of sadness for the Village of Schaumburg as it lost two individuals who devoted years to public service with the goal of positively impacting the community. The village mourns and remembers George Longmeyer and Hank Curcio, both of whom passed away recently.
George Longmeyer
George Longmeyer served as a longtime Village Manager for Schaumburg from 1986-1998 where he helped spearhead key developments including the redevelopment of Town Square; the completion of the “triangle project” at Golf, Roselle and Higgins Roads intersections, and the purchase of Schaumburg Regional Airport. Longmeyer, who was a Schaumburg resident for more than 30 years, also served as Assistant Village Manager from 1980-1986.
Following his retirement from the village, Longmeyer continued his service to the community by becoming a Park Commissioner with the Schaumburg Park District where he was appointed in 2000 and served until 2021. Longmeyer played a crucial role in obtaining the National Park and Recreation Association Gold Medal Award for excellence in parks and recreation. He also helped implement many park district projects that the community enjoys today including The Sport Center, K-9 Dog Park, Atcher Island Water Park, Bison’s Bluff Nature Playground, Olympic Park and renovations to the Schaumburg Golf Club.

Henry “Hank” Curcio
Hank Curcio became deeply involved in the community while he built a life in Schaumburg with his family. Following his successful career, Curcio went on to serve the Village of Schaumburg for a total of 23 years, first as a member and chairman of the Olde Schaumburg Center Commission, before being elected in 2003 to become a village trustee where he contributed to a variety of projects and initiatives. Curcio retired from his role on the Village Board in 2013. Read the obituary.
The village extends its prayers and sympathies to the families of George Longmeyer and Hank Curcio and is appreciative for the many years of dedicated service they both provided to the Schaumburg community.
| SCHAUMBURG RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED BUDGET PRESENTATION AWARD | |
The Village of Schaumburg has been honored with the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its FY 2024/25 budget plan. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. To receive the award, Schaumburg had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation by rating proficient in all four categories and also in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories. This marks the village's 10th consecutive year earning this accolade and 23rd time overall.
In addition to the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the budget document received special recognition for its performance measures and capital program. Special recognition is given when all three reviewers give the highest possible score in that particular category.

SMOKE ALARMS: MAKE THEM WORK FOR YOU
This year's Fire Prevention Week, which takes place Oct. 6-12, showcases the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 54 percent. The Schaumburg Fire Department offers these safety tips and guidelines to help keep you and your loved ones safe:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. As of January 2023, homes that are using smoke alarms with removable batteries are required to install new alarms that feature 10-year sealed battery alarms.
