PAINTING PUMPKINS PINK WITH THE POLICE
During the Public Safety Open House on Oct. 1, the Schaumburg Police Department invited children and their families to participate in painting pumpkins pink to show support to those battling breast cancer and bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. After the open house, police officers, and command and support staff painted the remainder of the pumpkins. The pumpkins painted by the community and officers were then delivered to three nearby breast cancer treatment centers for the patients to enjoy.

Special thanks to Goebbert's Farm & Garden Center, 40 W. Higgins Rd. in South Barrington, for its generous donation of the pumpkins used to make this project a success.
AL LARSON ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS PRESENTED
At the Oct. 11 Village Board meeting, Target and the Sublewski residence were named the latest recipients of the Al Larson Environmental Award. The award recognizes commercial/residential properties and individuals who have implemented sustainable initiatives in the Schaumburg community.

In 2019, Target, 1235 E. Higgins Rd., built a rooftop solar project with a nameplate capacity of 480 kW AC (kilowatts alternating current). It produces more than 12 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of electricity, which relates to a carbon offset of 8,833 metric tons of carbon dioxide avoided over its initial 15-year-long power purchase agreement.

In 2019, the Sublewski residence installed a 4.54 kW (kilowatts) rooftop energy system to generate the energy necessary to meet the home's electrical needs. In 2020, a rain garden with a capacity of 200 gallons was constructed to keep groundwater discharge on the property. And in 2021, a rain barrel was installed that overflows into the garden. An energy-efficient furnace, light bulbs and windows were also installed. Additionally, the homeowners compost their food and use a hybrid car.

For more information on the award and nomination process, visit the village’s website.

All landscape waste must be bagged properly and placed at the curb for pick up. Landscape waste pick up services are offered until the second week of December. For more information, visit the village's website.
VILLAGE SEEKING INFORMATION TO HELP MAINTAIN A SAFE WATER SUPPLY
The Village of Schaumburg is dedicated to delivering safe and clean drinking water to the community. An important part of this is ensuring the effective control of cross-connections. A cross-connection is a point where your water supply pipe comes into contact with a source that could contaminate the water. Lawn irrigation systems, fire sprinklers, hot tubs/spas and in-ground pools are examples of potential cross-connections. If left unprotected, cross-connections may allow contaminants or pollutants to enter the water system through a backflow. Backflows occur when a drop in water pressure causes water to flow in the opposite direction, increasing the potential for contaminated water to flow back into the system. To ensure the integrity of the water supply, the village has established a Cross-Connection Control program in compliance with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) requirements. A component of this program is a triennial survey of village properties. Your participation in a voluntary survey of your property will help determine where cross-connections may exist.

Two surveys are available: residential and commercial. Kindly respond to the appropriate online survey by Sunday, Nov. 6. Please contact the Engineering and Public Works Department at (847) 895-7100 with any questions.
