FEDERAL AND LOCAL LEADERS DISCUSS PROPOSED RAILWAY MERGER
|
On Oct. 4, Schaumburg Village President Tom Dailly, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and other local mayors and representatives from The Coalition to Stop CPKC held a press conference at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center Plaza to discuss the proposed merger between the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads. The press conference was held following a closed-door meeting with federal and local officials where concerns were discussed. The merger is pending before the Surface Transportation Board.
Speakers focused on the negative impacts on the eight suburban Chicago communities that would be affected by the increase in freight train traffic and train lengths. In addition, leaders called for more analysis and study of potential merger impacts to the Chicagoland region to ensure a complete and accurate picture of impacts to public safety, environmental health, and quality of life is considered by the Surface Transportation Board.
