SCHAUMBURG TO BEGIN PRELIMINARY DESIGN ON NORTH MEACHAM PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

At the Sept. 10 Village Board meeting, village officials approved an agreement to work with consultant Ciorba Group, Inc., to complete Phase I Preliminary Engineering for the North Meacham Road Pedestrian Bridge.

The pedestrian bridge, which will be constructed over Meacham Road between Thoreau Drive and Progress Parkway, is a key component that will serve as a crucial link between the east and west districts of 90 North. The bridge will provide pedestrians and bicyclists a comfortable crossing between the east and west sides of the corridor, and it is envisioned to be coordinated with adjacent land uses to create a seamless user experience and to provide access to a variety of destinations within the area. This visual landmark will incorporate village branding and elements of the North Meacham Road streetscape plan, which will draw attention to 90 North and establish Meacham Road as a distinctive corridor within Schaumburg and the region.

The bridge is one element of the North Meacham Road Corridor Plan. The plan identifies strategies that will transform the Meacham Road corridor between Algonquin Road and I-90. As envisioned in the plan, the recommended improvements will help unify the east and west sides of the 90 North District, shift the focus of the corridor to better serve multimodal users, develop a green urban corridor that will provide generous landscaped areas to minimize the impact of the roadway, and create a more sustainable, urban, and pedestrian-friendly corridor. For more information on the North Meacham Pedestrian Bridge or the Corridor Plan, please dial 311 in the village.

SCHAUMBURG BARN MEMBERS RECOGNIZE FIRST RESPONDERS ON NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE & REMEMBRANCE

For National Day of Service and Remembrance that is recognized on Sept. 11, several members of the Schaumburg Barn Senior Center made surprise visits to both the Schaumburg Police Department and Fire Station 51 to thank crews for their service. Members brought several totes filled with food and treats for police and fire personnel, enough to share across all shifts that day. Thank you to these community members for recognizing the hard work of our first responders.

Earlier that morning, a public Patriot Day Ceremony was held at the Public Safety Memorial. Fire and police personnel, village staff and elected officials honored the memories of the fallen with a "last alarm" bell ceremony, three-volley salute, and taps performed by VFW Post 2202. Speakers at the event included Fire Chief Jim Walters, Police Chief Bill Wolf, and Pastor Hayes. Students Vanna Francone and Mya McCurdy also performed “The Star Spangled Banner.” A video recap of the ceremony is posted on the village's Facebook and Instagram accounts.

HOW BICYCLE FRIENDLY IS SCHAUMBURG?

The Village of Schaumburg consistently receives the Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community designation for its continued commitment to improving bicycling in Schaumburg. To receive this recognition another year, the League of American Bicyclists wants to hear from community members who are familiar with biking or want to bike in Schaumburg. Your input will help both the village and the league better understand current bicycling conditions and identify areas for improvement in our community. Please take the survey by Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Once this is complete, the final roadway surface will be installed. The roadway remains closed to traffic at this time. For additional information, visit the project website.

Throughout next week, Cook County will be installing traffic signal cabinets at various intersections along Schaumburg Road between Knollwood Drive and Grand Central Lane.
