CELEBRATING THE START OF CONSTRUCTION OF ANDRETTI INDOOR KARTING & GAMES

Schaumburg Village President Tom Dailly and elected officials celebrated the start of upcoming construction on the village’s Entertainment District at a groundbreaking ceremony that was held Sept. 13 to recognize 90 North progress east of Meacham Road with the addition of Andretti Indoor Karting & Games.

An estimated 100 people attended the private event held just west of the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel and included business leaders, partner organizations, and various representatives involved in ongoing development of 90 North.

Representatives from Andretti Indoor Karting & Games joined Village President Dailly onstage to share in the excitement of construction of their 89,300 square foot entertainment facility. Andretti Karting is investing more than $30 million to build a multi-level indoor electric karting track, along with a bar/restaurant, duckpin bowling lanes, two-story laser tag arena, virtual reality experiences, 7D motion theater, and state of the art arcade. The second-floor mezzanine area will include private rooms for parties and events capable of accommodating groups from 10-2,000.

This construction phase of 90 North’s Entertainment District will also include a new six-level parking garage that will provide approximately 900 spaces and will be located next to Andretti Karting. The garage will serve future restaurants and development planned for the area as well as the hotel and convention center. For more information on 90 North, please visit the website.

BRAINTREE ROUNDABOUT DESIGN MOVES FORWARD

At the Sept. 10 meeting, the Village Board approved to move forward with the design of a roundabout at the intersection of Braintree Drive and Weathersfield Way as part of an upcoming reconstruction project.

Prior to this decision, staff has been working with a consultant to conduct a roundabout feasibility study at the intersection. A public meeting was held in May where feedback was obtained from residents along Braintree and Weathersfield Way.

The village continues to explore the use of roundabouts based on data and analysis that indicates they are a safer alternative than four-way stop control. The roundabout design supports a walkable community as the pedestrian crossings are set back from the approach to the roundabout prior to vehicles entering the circulation flow. This separation minimizes potential conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. Visibility for both motorists and pedestrians is improved, as the circular layout allows for better sightlines compared to traditional intersections with multiple directions of traffic. Pedestrians and bicyclists retain the right-of-way and motorists must yield to them before proceeding through the roundabout.  When designed properly, the roundabout forces motorists to slow down to navigate through the structure of roundabout, which provides additional reaction time for pedestrians in crosswalks and other vehicle conflicts.

The village also studied peer communities in the Chicago region in which similar roundabouts were introduced and traffic data was reviewed following the installation of the roundabouts.

Additional information including meeting exhibits and the roundabout design can be found on the village’s website. For more information, contact the Transportation Department at (847) 923-3861 or dial 311 in the village.

FIRE DEPARTMENT WINS FIRST PLACE IN CHARITY TOURNAMENT

Congratulations to the Schaumburg Fire Department Local 4092 on taking home the first-place trophy for winning its annual charity softball tournament – the first time this has been accomplished in the 30-year history of the event.

The event was held Sept. 14 at Olympic Park and included opponents from more than 30 fire departments that competed in a bracket-style competition. Schaumburg firefighters host the event annually to raise money that helps support the Ronald McDonald House, the Schaumburg food pantry, and helps the Schaumburg township provide Christmas presents for families in need. Past tournaments have taken in more than $40,000 each year.

Schaumburg’s fire department began the day by defeating last year’s champions Highland Park, followed by a win over Bensenville, Naperville, and Glenview. Schaumburg's team beat the Skokie Fire Department in the final game.

Chief Walters proudly hoisted the championship trophy over his head after the victory and presented it to team captain, Steve Grothendieck. The Schaumburg squad consisted of Tyler Mortensen, Brian Yamamoto, Steve Grothendieck, Joe Biallas, Matt Stangle, Nick Steiner, Adam Greene, Joey Fruscione, Nick Kasper, retired Schaumburg police officer Mike Hanley, and was coached by Andy Salo. Also pictured is Brian and Kevin Leska, who coordinate and lead the entire Schaumburg softball event.

EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATE IN INCLUSION WORKSHOP

This week the Village of Schaumburg welcomed back Dr. Steve L. Robbins, founder and owner of S.L. Robbins & Associates (SLR), to once again provide education to employees on the topic of inclusion. Dr. Robbins provided two educational workshops Sept. 17 for employees across all departments where he used his science-based approach to discuss how human behavior influences our need to belong. Dr. Robbins centered his discussion on the 4 R’s Model of Change, a powerful framework designed to help individuals and organizations navigate change and foster inclusion. Information presented included the following takeaways:

Recognize – Have self-awareness and awareness of others in various situations.

Reflection – Take time to consider options for action when presented with a situation.

Response – Determine if the response you choose will have a positive intent for the group.

Reward – Reinforce good behavior so that it can become a model for future behavior.

The village continues its multi-year partnership with Dr. Robbins and offers various webinars and other instructional workshops throughout the year for employees so they can continue to develop professionally to better serve the community. With a background in communication, social psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, Dr. Robbins has dedicated his career to helping organizations and individuals understand the power of inclusive practices. For more information about the village’s efforts, contact the Human Resources Department by dialing 311 in Schaumburg or visit the website.

Pace Bus Boarding Temporary Changes

Due to construction at the Pace Northwest Transportation Center, passenger boarding will temporarily be relocated to Kimberly Drive. The parking lot will remain open. Most routes will detour slightly to serve the temporary boarding locations. Please allow additional travel time during the detour and refer to the Pace Notification for specific detour changes. Construction is expected to be completed by November 22. This does not affect the current boarding location for the Soldier Field Express. For more information, dial 311 in Schaumburg. For more information on Pace services in Schaumburg, visit the website.

Celebrate Schaumburg's German Heritage

Germany played a huge part in Schaumburg’s history, from its earliest settlers to the village’s namesake. The village's name pays tribute to the area of Germany where many of the township's residents originated, Schaumburg-Lippe. Land records show that Schaumburg Township property remained almost exclusively under German ownership until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Now, Schaumburg is home to approximately 23,000 immigrants from nearly every continent.

You can celebrate Schaumburg's German heritage at the Schaumburg Park District's free Octoberfest event on Saturday, Oct. 5. For event information, visit the park district's website.

Rodenburg Road Reconstruction & Resurfacing

A thin layer of asphalt was installed, and the utility structures are being raised to the final surface grade. Please use extra caution driving around those structures; they are 2 inches higher than the surrounding pavement. New traffic signal detection loops in the southbound lanes at Central Avenue will be installed Sept. 21. Work will continue on landscaping along the edges of the roadway, the concrete curbs and medians, and the new fences in the area. The roadway remains closed to traffic. The reopening of Rodenburg Road is tentatively scheduled for the last week of September or the first week of October.  For additional information, visit the project website.

Cook County Project - Plum Grove Road Pavement Maintenance Program

Work continues on Plum Grove Road between Nerge Road and Higgins Road with crews performing saw cutting and concrete removal. About 70 percent of concrete removal on the northbound lane has been completed between Nerge to Schaumburg. Concrete removal will begin after Sept. 23. For questions, please contact the Cook County Transportation and Highways Department at (312) 603-1601 or view the project flyer.
