FIRE PIT SAFETY TIPS FROM SCHAUMBURG FIRE DEPT.
|
|
|
|
Many residents enjoy using fire pits while spending time outdoors. The Village of Schaumburg has regulations in place to ensure fire pits are used safely:
- A permit is required for the installation of a permanent fire pit.
- Portable fire pits must be located on a non-combustible, hard, level surface such as concrete, paver bricks, or asphalt.
- All fire pits (when in use) shall be located a minimum of 15 ft. from buildings, combustible structures and property lines. The fire pit's diameter shall not exceed 36 inches.
- Fuels shall be limited to unpainted, clean, seasoned, dry wood and manufactured logs, propane or other similar gases.
- All fires must be maintained in such a manner as to minimize the generation of smoke.
- All fires are prohibited between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. In addition, fires shall not burn for more than a total of six hours in any 24-hour period of time.
- Recreational fires shall be constantly attended by a person over the age of 18 until the fire is extinguished.
- A portable fire extinguisher or other approved onsite fire-extinguishing material, such as dirt, sand, water, or a garden hose shall be available when any fire pit is in use.
Following the use of a fire pit, please be sure to properly dispose of any ashes and coals. Ashes and coals can take over 24 hours to completely cool, and if discarded into a plastic or paper receptacle too soon, they can start a fire. The Schaumburg Fire Department advises residents to let hot ashes and coals cool completely in the fire pit before transferring to a metal container (placed away from anything that can burn) and dousing them with water.

|
Tomorrow (Sept. 25) is National "If You See Something, Say Something" Awareness Day. While the Schaumburg Police Department appreciates the community's vigilance in alerting potential criminal activity in the village through social media, email or other online channels, the police department reminds residents to dial 911 if authorities need to be alerted to a situation that might require police attention. Please remember that information posted on social media might not always be true or accurate, which can lead to misinformation.
