News From the Lakeview Senior Center!
Check out these highlights / special events for the month of December!
- Saturday, December 8, 5-7 p.m., Circle of Lights! Immediately following the Christmas Parade, over 300 luminaries will surround Lake Tomahawk. Christmas carols will be sung, Santa Claus will hand out surprises, hayrides will be provided and free refreshments will be on hand.
- Friday, December 14, 5:30-9:30. Mountain Music in Old Fort! See Van Clan for more information.
- Saturday, December 28, 7-10 p.m. Holiday Dance! We will be sending out all the details soon!
- Check out New Programs section as well for ways to add some sparkle to your winter routine.
We are excited to announce the 2013 Spring Trip is to Savannah, Georgia, Monday, March 4th - Friday, March 8th. Cost is $459 /pp, which includes bus fare, four nights lodging, breakfast and dinner, and fees covered for all pre-planned events. Lunch each day is on your own.
We will begin taking reservations and securing deposits for the trip on January 2, 2013.
Please join me in welcoming to the center my new assistant, Cyndy Kirkland. A native Texan, Cyndy moved to Black Mountain in March of this year. She brings many years of experience in account management, client services, and office administration. She is excited about serving the community of Black Mountain and helping to bring more services and programs to the center. In addition, she is a certified yoga instructor, specializing in yoga for older bodies. She also volunteers her time at the VA hospital teaching yoga to those veterans in recovery. Check out her class here at the center on Tuesday and Thursdays mornings.

Swamp Rabbit Bike Trail, in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.
Monday, December 17, 9:30 - 5
We'll bike about 10 miles along the beautiful Swamp Rabbit bike trail to Falls Park and then return on the same path (20 miles total ride). Although the trip is mostly flat, riders must be very comfortable on bikes. You may bring your own bike/helmet that is in good condition. Bring your lunch in a backpack to eat on the ride - or stop at a cafe and purchase lunch. Depart from the Asheville City Parks Recreation Office, 72 Gashes Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28805 at 9:30 am; return about 5:00 pm. Fee: $18 R; $20 NR. Minimum 6 participants. Bike Rentals area available for a $30 fee, they must be reserved in advance. Deadline for reservations is Friday, December 14.

Old Fort Mountain Music Night
Friday, December 14, 5:30-9:30
Come join us as we travel to Old Fort for a night of bluegrass and mountain music. We'll leave from Lakeview Sr Center at 5:30, stopping for dinner along the way (not included in fee). $5 transportation fee.

Sing-A-Long with Maggie continues every 1st & 3rd Monday, 3 - 4 p.m.
Coming in January - Qigong! (chee-gong) Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. Qigong is a deeply powerful method of visualization and gentle movement for self-healing. It is easily learned by anyone wishing to improve and sustain their heath and well-being. Great for balance!

Hikes

December 4th: Grassy Creek Falls, DuPont State Park. Cost $5 per person. This is a moderate hike, 4.2 miles, 360' climb which descends to the middle of the falls and a viewing platform.
December 11th: Blue Ridge Parkway - more details to be announced.
December 18th: Montreat - Greybeard to Pot Cove Gap. This is a moderate trek, 2 hours round trip.
ALL hikes leave at 1:00am from the Lakeview Senior Center parking lot. They are free unless otherwise noted. Please bring your own water and snacks.

Snack and Learn

December 17th, 11:00 a.m.-Health Ridge Owner and Pharmacist, Ruth Higgins will make a presentation to interested seniors on how to avoid and the risks of falling. We will all benefit from this session that will include a hot cup of coffee and snack.

Mahjong For Beginners

Anyone interested in learning the game of Mahjong is invited to the Lake View Senior Center at the above dates in December from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Mahjong originated in China and is commonly played by four players. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance.
Marilyn Mendel is volunteering to teach beginners the game. Or, if your familiar with the game and would like to play, mark the dates & join us. Anyone interested, please call Marilyn at 828*280*8344.

Circle of Lights

Tomahawk
Join us following the Black Mountain Christmas parade for more fun including live music, hay rides, and refreshments. For this holiday celebration, 350 luminaries will light up Lake Tomahawk. Even Santa will have something for the little ones!! A bonfire and hot dog roast will keep everyone warm!
For $2 you can purchase a luminary and have the name of a loved one inscribed on it. That night it will be illuminated and placed along Lake Tomahawk.

Lakeview Senior Center Offers Hot Daily Lunch

Lunch is provided Monday-Friday, 12 noon for persons over 60 years old and/or legally disabled. Suggested donation $1.50 each day. Presented in conjunction with the Buncombe County Council On Aging. Transportation is provided by Mountain Mobility and can be arranged through the Lakeview Senior Center. To make a reservation, kindly call 24 hours in advance to our Nutrition Site Director at 828-669-2035.
