From Classroom to Competition: Schenectady Students Turn Entrepreneurial Ideas Into Winning Pitches

What happens when students are given the tools, confidence, and real-world guidance to think like entrepreneurs?

At Schenectady High School, the answer became clear during last week’s business pitch competition — where the top three winning students were all participants connected to entrepreneurship programming facilitated through the in class room work the Success Map Initiative as been doing in partnership with the business teachers.

Over the past school year, students participated in hands-on entrepreneurship and leadership sessions focused on developing real business ideas, strengthening communication skills, understanding branding and financial basics, and learning how to confidently pitch solutions to real-world problems.

Rather than simply teaching theory, the program emphasized practical application:

• Identifying customer problems

• Building value-driven business concepts

• Understanding budgeting and revenue

• Branding and marketing

• Public speaking and presentation skills

• Leadership, confidence, and business mindset

By the time students stepped onto the stage for the competition, they weren’t just presenting projects — they were presenting vision, creativity, and belief in their own potential.

Seeing students coached through this process earn the top three placements was more than a proud moment. It was proof that when young people are exposed to entrepreneurship early, they rise to the occasion.

The winner shared after the competition:

“I still can’t believe I won, this wouldn’t have happened without your help, Trent.”

Moments like this are exactly why our program matters.

Entrepreneurship education builds skills that extend far beyond business ownership — including communication, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, problem-solving, and confidence. These are skills that prepare students not only for careers/business, but for life.

At Success Map Initiative, our mission is to create pathways for youth and underserved communities through workforce development, entrepreneurship, leadership training, and career readiness programming. Whether inside schools, community organizations, youth programs, or justice-impacted settings, we focus on helping participants discover what’s possible for their future.

The success of these students is a reminder that young people already have the ideas, creativity, and talent — they simply need the right opportunities, mentorship, and support systems to develop them.

As demand continues to grow for engaging, real-world career and entrepreneurship programming, Success Map Initiative is actively partnering with:

• School districts

• Youth organizations

• Community-based programs

• Workforce development agencies

• After-school and summer programs

If your organization is looking to bring impactful entrepreneurship, leadership, workforce readiness, or youth development programming to your students or participants, we would welcome the opportunity to connect.
