SCHOLAR SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT:

From New Rochelle High School to

the Global Science & Engineering Stage

Carlos Del Aguila, a LUCA Scholar from New Rochelle High School, has just been named a finalist at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair, the largest pre-college STEM competition in the world.

It’s an incredible achievement. But what makes it even more meaningful is how he got there.

Carlos is a first-generation student. There was no roadmap at home for navigating advanced research opportunities, competitive science fairs, or what it takes to stand out on a national stage. And yet, he pursued a question that matters: Who gets access to research funding—and why?

For his project, “The Funding Gap in the NIH,” Carlos analyzed national datasets to explore how community demographics may influence how research institutions receive funding. He built an original database, conducted statistical analysis, and uncovered findings that point toward a more equitable future in scientific research.

THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE

The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair is the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition, bringing together top young researchers in grades 9-12 to showcase independent research, compete for nearly $8million in prizes, and engage with professional scientists.

BIG NEWS FOR CARLOS!

At this year's Westchester Science & Engineering Far, Carlos earned 1st Place in Behavioral and Social Sciencesand with it, a spot at the international competition this May in Phoenix, Arizona!

Let that sink in for a moment.

A first-generation student from our community… now standing among the top young scientists in the world.

This is what access looks like. This is what happens when talent is met with opportunity.

Because behind Carlos is something just as powerful: consistent guidance, encouragement, and people who believed in him every step of the way.

Congratulations, Carlos!

We’re so proud of your extraordinary talent, hard work, and determination.

To our amazing LUCA community:

Thank you for believing in the dreams of young Scholars and being part of this incredible journey.
