SFNE is pleased to announced the winner of the 2017-18 AISC/SFNE $2,500 Scholarship is Derek Cote, from Connecticut.

Derek completed his undergraduate studies at Central Connecticut State University with a major in Civil Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. While enrolled at CCSU, he worked in the steel fabrication industry at Shepard Steel Co., and served as the President of the ASCE student chapter.

Derek has decided to further his education, and begin his graduate studies at the University of Hartford. He will continue working at Shepard Steel as a Project Manager while he pursues his master’s degree.

During his senior year at CCSU, Derek led the design for the Blue Steel team in the AISC Steel Bridge Competition. Due to his success with this project, Derek is now leading the fabrication of the bridge for Shepard Steel Co.

Derek’s goal is to obtain his Professional Engineer (PE) Degree and continue working toward a rewarding career in steel fabrication. He plans to focus his studies on steel construction and connections. During the next few years he will also work with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) to further his understanding of steel construction and the AISC audit process.

SFNE established the scholarship through the AISC Education Foundation program to assist qualified students, and to encourage creativity, interest and proficiency in the fabricated structural steel construction industry.
