THANK YOU!!!
To Our Scholarship & Tuition Assistance Benefactors
Hudson Catholic has been blessed with a host of recent scholarship and tuition assistance awards from a variety of avenues. We are so very grateful to have their support for our students and their families.
The Budinich Family Foundation
On Monday, September 21st, the Budinich family (Richard, and son Marc ’88) hosted a charity golf outing at the Skyway Golf Course (Lincoln Park) in Jersey City, dedicated to the memory of Kathryn Budinich, the family matriarch and founder of the highly-acclaimed 15 Fox Place Restaurant in Jersey City. The annual event attended by many local Hawk alums raises money for scholarship and medical research, which benefits students at Hudson Catholic, St. Dominic Academy, and the Cure for AHC (Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood).

The Tommy Shine Foundation
The Tommy Shine Foundation undertakes several fundraising events during the year in order to raise money for scholarship for deserving students at Hudson Catholic. On October 7th, Bob England ’83 and other Board members of the Foundation took the time to deliver a check in the amount of $7,000, awarded once again to senior Zanai Jones, an Honors student in the Dual Enrollment Program who will be heading off to Villanova next year to play NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball.

The late Tom Shine ’78 was an active member of the Hudson Catholic community and for many years supported numerous causes and events aimed at bringing financial assistance to the school. “The Shiner” spent his life in sports, including roles in public relations for the New Jersey Nets and Devils. He passed all too young in February 2015, and his many friends and family formed the foundation that bears his name later that same year. Tom’s sister, Irene Shine-Balance, who worked to maintain Tommy’s memory, herself passed away on August 24th. Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Shine/Balance family.

The Jersey City St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee
In July, Hudson Catholic received a check for $4,000 from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee of Jersey City. A letter from Chairwoman Maureen Hulings, mother of Michael Hulings ‘90, designated the funds for scholarship, in memory of the late Det. Melvin Santiago, to be shared between two students.
Alumni Association Hudson Catholic High School
The charity of Mr. Jack Weisberg, a long-time benefactor of the Alumni Association and, in turn, Hudson Catholic, through The Jack Weisberg Charitable Foundation, seems to find new and many ways to positively impact the lives of our students.

Recently, Jack provided a $12,000 gift to the Alumni Association that was earmarked to fund a 4-year, $3,000 per year scholarship to be awarded by the Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children (SFIC).

Hawk freshman Michael Torres and his mother, Jomayra, became the recipients of that gift at the SFIC’s annual event on September 23rd at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, where Hudson Catholic received top billing and was featured in the main event for scholarship awards.

The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC)
Hudson Catholic’s second largest provider of tuition assistance, the SFIC this year has awarded $111,300 to 64 Hudson Catholic families, representing the largest total ever awarded by the SFIC to Hudson Catholic. On October 13th, Joe Hughes, Board Chairman of the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children, and pictured below with President Richard Garibell, visited Hudson Catholic, along with Jasmin Roman, Director of Scholarship programs, to meet administrators, faculty, and most importantly, a number of students who receive tuition assistance from the SFIC. These are great believers and partners in the benefits of Catholic education.
The Student Partner Alliance (S/PA)
The Student Partner Alliance is also firmly committed to Hudson Catholic as a values-based educational institution. Their support of our school, through financial assistance and student mentoring, has continued to grow over the years, to the point where they also, this year, have awarded their highest total value in tuition assistance, $113,000, to 41 students, which makes the S/PA the largest single tuition assistance provider to Hudson Catholic.
In Closing
Hudson Catholic is deeply grateful to our many scholarship and tuition assistance angels, the hundreds of individuals who enable these fine organizations the opportunity to make a substantial difference in the lives of our students. God bless them all!
