Greetings!
Nursing Scholarship Established by Loyal Wilson
Mr. Loyal Wilson of Hudson, IN, recently established a scholarship at the Steuben County Community Foundation to permanently honor his late wife, Trois. In 1945, at 17 years of age, Trois Wagner Wilson was the valedictorian of Angola High School with a nursing scholarship from Michigan State University lined up for after her graduation. However, Trois chose a different path in life. She decided to marry Loyal Wilson and support his career, as well as dedicating her life to raising their four boys. Just as she had worked hard in school, Trois worked hard to support their family.

“All four of her boys were Eagle Scouts and graduated from college because of her. Us men never questioned her direction or discipline—she knew what was best for us,” said Loyal.

When Trois died in February of 2018, just after her 90 th birthday, her husband decided to establish a scholarship in her honor and memory. Loyal wishes to provide an opportunity to train quality people for the medical field, and to give people a chance for the future that Trois had wanted at one point in life. The Trois Wagner Wilson Nursing Scholarship Fund, a permanently endowed scholarship, will provide 2 scholarships each year to Angola and Prairie Heights graduates pursuing a full-time nursing degree from any school. Financial need and practical experience in the medical field will be considered in the evaluation.

Mary Jane Kruse Scholarship Awarded
After teaching English at MSD of Steuben County for over 26 years, Mary Jane Kruse decided to establish a scholarship through her estate in 2007 for graduating seniors and non-traditional students in Steuben County. This spring, Caitlin Lanning received the Mary Jane Kruse Memorial Scholarship award, allowing her to begin the journey towards her dream of working for a publishing or editing company. "One day I want to be able to go to a bookstore and say, ‘Yeah, I helped edit that book!’” said Caitlin. Caitlin is the first person to receive the Kruse scholarship in three years.

Caitlin was kind enough to share some scholarship tips for seniors as they begin to prepare applications. Click here to read , and share her advice with any students you know!
Vocational Scholarships Available
Scholarship season is underway at the Steuben County Community Foundation. Our committee is hard at work reviewing applications for the 2019 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, and our general scholarship applications will be open on November 1. In addition to scholarships for graduating high school seniors and non-traditional students to attend college, SCCF also holds 4 vocational scholarships that allow individuals and employers to gain work-related skills. The Angola Vocational Training Initiative Scholarship is available on a rolling due date for a Steuben County resident with a high school diploma or equivalency and 2 years work experience. Similarly, the Steuben County Vocational Education Scholarship is available on a rolling due date for any Steuben County resident seeking some form of vocational training. The Lakeland Marine Retailers Association Scholarship is available November 1 as part of the general scholarship cycle, and the Donald W Rogers Vocational Scholarship is administered through the Angola Elks Club .

If you are interested in funding for a vocational program or know someone who would like to apply, see our website for more details.
Donations of Stock
Our mission at SCCF is to connect people who care with causes that matter to them. Throughout the year, we work with donors who give at all levels—from fundraising efforts to build up local community funds to estate gifts that allow SCCF to continue an individual’s legacy. If you would like to make a gift of appreciated stock before the end of the tax year, stock transfers should be initiated by December 17 th in order to ensure adequate time for the financial institution to process the transfer. Although SCCF often shares stories of generous donors in this newsletter, we have many donors who prefer to remain anonymous. SCCF is happy to work with donors as they pursue their philanthropic goals!
Audited Financials
