News from Carol...
It’s been 4 months since I began serving on the CCSD school board. Although it's been an adjustment, I can assure you I’m trying to stay focused on teaching and learning.
As the liaison for Strategic Education, I worked on creating a schedule for monitoring the district’s goals and guardrails, putting together a survey to guide board discussions on specific topics, requesting a program evaluation of the newly implemented EL Curriculum, attending audit and finance meetings, and creating a proposal for understanding how testing relates to student achievement. The district presented this report of winter testing and we are seeing progress.
With the election of new school board members, there have been a number of policy changes…some which help us with our responsibilities. For transparency, I’ve objected to changing Policy BC and recommended a “moment of silence” as an appropriate way for public school officials to respect the diversity of our community while seeking wisdom and discernment.
The calendar created a lot of public interest and it will be interesting to see how the community wants to move forward with some of the more innovative suggestions. The public is invited to give feedback via this survey.
Moving forward, I will continue to advocate for best practices in public education. My priorities for the next few months will be: hiring of the superintendent, increasing teacher salaries, lowering class size, and adopting a budget that enhances neighborhood schools and classrooms.
Here is a Teacher Salary Survey that I hope you will take time to complete.
Upcoming Meetings include:
3/7 (Audit & Finance); 3/13 (Committee of the Whole); and 3/27 Regular School Board Meeting).
Here is the motto I carry with me each day to stay focused on the important work that needs to be done. In the words of Maran Wright Edelman...
Education is for improving the lives of others and
for leaving our community and world better than you found it.
Again, I want to thank you for your support of my election to the school board.
Respectfully,
Dr. Carol Tempel
CCSD School Board Trustee, District 9
