School Council Update #10 - November 9th, 2018

Thanks to everyone who attended last week's Parent Conference - what a fantastic day. It was so nice to connect with parents in person. For those who missed it - you can check out the video of our keynote or read the workshops presentations - more information below.
In the next few weeks, the district will launch a community wide consultation. We are looking for your thoughts about what we do well, where we can improve, and what students need to be successful in learning and in life. This information will be used to help develop the top priorities for the OCDSB for the next four years. Stay tuned for more information about how you can Share Your Thoughts @OCDSB!

Remembrance Day
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board students and staff commemorate Remembrance Day. While some schools have already held ceremonies, many will come together on Monday, November 12, 2018 to commemorate Remembrance Day.
Ceremonies include assemblies, choir and glee club presentations, reading of poems and dramatic productions. Students have spent many weeks researching the importance of honouring the date and time when armies stopped fighting in World War I - November 11th at 11am in 1918. Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars.
Remembrance Day services are an important part of Canada's civic life. Join us as at 133 Greenbank on Monday, November 12th at we pay respect for those lost in war.

OCDSB Privacy Week
N
ovember 12th to 16th is Privacy Week at the OCDSB. The OCDSB is committed to the careful management of personal information and protection of privacy. The school district collects, uses, retains and discloses personal information in the course of meeting its statutory duties and responsibilities. All employees are responsible for the protection of personal, confidential, and sensitive information entrusted to them. School councils also need to consider privacy when collecting personal information related to council activities.
How can you protect privacy?
There are many things you can do to protect your privacy and the privacy of others. That means collecting, storing and sharing personal information with care. For example:
- store information securely;
- use strong passwords;
- be careful when sharing or distributing information;
- collect only the information needed;
- use the information only for the purpose for which it was collected;
- manage digital information and use the privacy settings;
- if you suspect a privacy breach, report it!

14th Annual Rainbow Youth Forum
All OCDSB secondary school students are invited to attend the 14th Annual Rainbow Youth Forum which is put on in collaboration with the Rainbow Youth Service Providers Network. The forum is a celebration of our diversity and a day to learn together. Educators and students will interact with dynamic speakers, listen to inspiring stories, and receive valuable information to help embed character education and cultural proficiency into our daily practice, and encourage safer, more inclusive school environments.

Take Our Kids to Work Day 2018
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 is “Take Our Kids to Work Day”. It is an opportunity for young people to understand the importance of staying in school by learning first-hand what skills are required in today’s workplace, and to start exploring career options in a practical way.
The OCDSB welcomes and supports this annual country-wide initiative for grade 9 students.
Our students have participated in this successful partnering of education and business since the program’s inception in 1994. Parents and employers may be interested in visiting

Dunning-Foubert SAC Used Book Sale
Dunning-Foubert Elementary School is having their annual used book sale on Thursday, November 22nd from 4pm-8pm and Friday, November 23rd from 8:30am-12pm. All children's books are just 50 cents, soft covers are $1, and hard covers $2. There will also be magazines, games, puzzles, DVDs and CDs for sale. All money raised will go towards the purchase of new supplies for the school, including gym equipment, electronics, library books and more. For more information visit the

Save the date! Woodroffe High School is holding their fifth annual Craft Sale on Saturday, December 1st. The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2410 Georgina Drive. With free admission, over 30 artisans, and a breakfast and lunch cafe, there are plenty of reasons to come by.

Crystal Bay Fundraiser
Looking to start your Christmas shopping early? Crystal Bay has you covered. The Crystal Bay Centre for Special Education is holding a fundraiser event at Indigo Pinecr
est - 2735 Iris St - on November 13th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Shoppers can purchase books, gifts, and more, with 15-20% of sales donated back to the school. Drop by the Crystal Bay information table during the fundraiser for any questions. All proceeds
will be put towards new accessible playground equipment for the school.
