Headshot of Tanya Bulette
Reignite your Passion

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year. My name is Tanya Bulette and I am the counseling coordinator at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). I work with school districts to support school counselors and provide professional learning opportunities to help you connect, learn, and grow. As we launch into the new season, I am excited to share new programs and events that have been planned and created to celebrate our successes, learn best practices, and build connections and relationships with one another as we move our work forward to support students, families, and communities.

Last weekend, we moved my youngest son, Jake into his dorm at Woodbury University in Burbank. As difficult as it was to say goodbye, part of me saw a new light in my son as he gleamed at the learning opportunities that were placed before him. As a film major, he is located in the heart of movie-making magic and is surrounded by students, educators, and working professionals who are passionate about their craft. Although he does not know where his journey will take him, he is able to find excitement in the possibilities, because of the people who support and believe in him.

How often do we get excited about new opportunities to grow in our profession and reignite the passion that drove us into our careers as school counselors? I always find that when I am surrounded by other like-minded and passionate educators, I feel inspired and encouraged to try new things. It is my hope that as you read through this newsletter you make plans to attend at least one new program or event to support your growth and learning. Whatever you find to reignite your passion, the greater joy you will experience, and that will be passed along to your students and families through everything that you do.

Importance of Joining a Professional Organization

Membership in a relevant professional organization is one of the things that separates a profession from a conventional job, and is a key element that defines a professional.
Joining a professional organization is critical in keeping abreast of the latest knowledge and practices locally, regionally, and globally. As professionals, it is our ethical responsibility to ensure that we are staying on top of local and state polices and that we are advocating for our students, our communities, and for the important role that we all play as school counselors. Joining both the California Association of School Counselors (CASC) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) are important steps toward getting connected, staying refreshed and renewed in our practice, and for learning and growth.

Equity Blueprint for Action
SDCOE Equity Blueprint for Action

The San Diego County Office of Education released the Equity Blueprint for Action, a document aimed to provide district leaders and stakeholders with community-informed and research-based guidance to improve outcomes for historically marginalized students. Stakeholders from across San Diego County dedicated their time, expertise, and passion during a yearlong dialogue about improving educational outcomes for African American, American Indian, and Latinx students, and voiced their dreams, aspirations, and community-specific concerns to improve our K-12 educational systems. This interactive guide includes student voice and input, guidance by community leaders, links to useful resources, and a road map for implementing this work in small steps to make a large impact.

Land Acknowledgement Toolkit
Adding Land Acknowledgements to our Practice

A land acknowledgement is a critical step toward working with native communities to secure meaningful partnership and inclusion in the stewardship and protection of their cultural resources and homelands. We honor these ancestral grounds and support the resilience and strength that all Indigenous peoples have shown worldwide. The first page of the Equity Blueprint for Action calls us to acknowledge that the unseeded territory of California is home to nearly 200 tribal nations, and to honor the original inhabitants of our various regions. The land that surrounds us is part of who we are presently, and it reflects our histories. To learn more about land acknowledgements, please access the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center Land Acknowledgment toolkit.
