San Diego County 2021 School Counselors of the Year

Congratulations to our 2021 San Diego County School Counselors of the Year! Each recipient was surprised last week at their respective campus by their colleagues, students, and families. The pool of candidates for this year's awards was extremely impressive, making the selection process challenging. However, we are excited about our three recipients and know that they will represent our county and profession well. All recipients were awarded a $500 check from our sponsor, North Island Credit Union, and will be celebrated in the morning session of the San Diego School Counselor Con on Feb. 4.
Elementary School Counselor of the Year

Ann Pierce
Campo Elementary
Mountain Empire Unified School District

Mona Noren, principal of Campo Elementary, wrote in her nomination letter, “Ann goes above and beyond supporting our families especially during this pandemic and crisis learning. She continuously builds relationships with outside agencies and stakeholders to increase family services in our rural communities. Our school has a successful PBIS program because of her leadership and support to all the staff helping with implementations of school-wide expectations. She is fun and creative when delivering classroom lessons on kindness and anti-bullying awareness. Ann is one of the most compassionate and selfless people I know who puts our students first under all circumstances.”

Middle School Counselor of the Year

Bonnie Hayman
La Mesa Arts Academy
La Mesa-Spring Valley School District

Beth Thomas, principal of La Mesa Arts Academy, comments, “To honor Bonnie with this award would mean honoring the best in the counseling profession. By highlighting her talents as a mediator, speaker, motivator, connector, and visionary, it would truly shed light on the impact of school counselors. In 2020, the role of the counselor has, deservedly, been underscored. Bonnie has done what she has always done. She has led our community of students, families, and staff through this emotional time by holding Zoom meetings as a means of parental support, connecting families to resources, and has provided social times for our children outside of the academic setting. She has done all of this as she always has: with calm, grace, skill, and compassion.”

High School Counselor of the Year

Cherryl Baker
Mission Hills High School
San Marcos Unified School District

David Cochrane, retired Director of Student Services and former principal of Mission Hills, wrote in his letter of recommendation, “I have the utmost confidence in Cherryl’s abilities as a school counselor. She has tremendous rapport with everyone she works with. She is extremely intelligent, hardworking, and most of all she is genuinely the most caring person I have met. Cherryl’s skills as a school counselor and leader have not gone unnoticed at the district office. She is called upon frequently to be a part of districtwide committees and as a resource for questions regarding school counseling.”
