SCHOOL HEALTH AND WELLNESS
News and highlights about school health and wellness efforts across our District!
Who are we? The NHPS Health & Wellness Department provides support and guidance to schools and community partners to implement and coordinate efforts that promote the physical, social and emotional health of all students and staff. Through collaboration with many partners, our schools are becoming more health-promoting places in which to learn, work and succeed. We know that healthy kids make better learners, and our mission is to help all students to be physically and emotionally healthy, engaged and successful learners.
Through our newsletters, we want to share information about current wellness efforts happening in the schools, useful resources for staff, parents and partners, and we also strive to recognize the health heroes who are making “healthy change” possible every day in our schools!

Thank You, Mr. Clark!
This newsletter is dedicated to Will Clark, former COO of New Haven Public Schools. He has taken a position with Waterbury Public Schools and will be deeply missed by this department and so many others at NHPS. For over a decade, Mr. Clark has been the driving force behind making health and wellness a priority in this District and believed that supporting the "whole child" was essential to ensure that all students could reach their full potential in school and in life.  He was also the co-chair of the District Wellness Committee for 10 years.
Building Inclusive Communities
LGBTQ+ Youth Task Force
In January of 2018, the City of New Haven’s Department of Youth Services launched an LGBTQ+ Youth Task Force, bringing together teachers, health professionals, youth-serving organizations, and LGBTQ+ advocates who “strive to build an affirming community and empower all NHV LGBTQ+ youth with resources and advocacy to lead healthy, open, safe, and meaningful lives.”
The task force has focused on four areas that impact LGBTQ+ youth — BOE policies and PD, youth-focused advocacy and safe spaces, health education, and housing insecurity.
Phys Ed and Health Teacher’s Message for Her Students:
You Don’t Have To Like It, But You Do Have To Try It
Interview with Mary Glickman,
East Rock School
Meet Mary Glickman, Physical Education and Health Education teacher at East Rock Community and Cultural Studies Magnet School. She has been working there now for 13 years, and as of today, trained more than a thousand New Haven kids. Mary says she always loved the idea of teaching, and if not for physical education (PE), she would be teaching reading or languages. In September, her school was among the four CT schools named America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, receiving national recognition for their commitment to students’ health and well-being. In the interview (click on the link below) we talk about her role in this success, about her teaching methods, her challenges and achievements.
