Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

OLOL PJ’s for the Holiday was scheduled last week. Due to a number of circumstances, we postponed the event with hopes of rescheduling. This Christmas season as I’m sure you know can get quite hectic. We were unable to reschedule the event. “PJ’s for the Holidays” was an evening for our K-4 students for participate in various hands-on activities. The price of admission was a pair of new PJ’s for a family in need. We wanted to find a way that we can still help this organization.  Therefore we are making Friday, December 17 a Pajama day for all students. Any K-8 student can wear PJ’s if they bring in a pair of children's pajamas that will be given to a family in need. Thank you in advance for helping with OLOL Advent outreach.

One of my favorite things to do is to analyze data. I did find some time to do a deeper dive into our fall MAPS scores. Generally our fall MAPS scores are used as a baseline to determine growth from fall to spring. We can extract data during any time period so I was curious to see how our students did using a fall-to-fall comparison. There were some very positive developments that I would like to share. In January, I will highlight some of the good news. Stay tuned.

The students and staff have done a great job of being resilient, dedicated, and persevering the first half of the school year. I am extremely proud of how well our students and staff have responded to another year of uncertainty. With Christmas around the corner I wanted to give us a little reason to celebrate and get into the Christmas spirit if we aren’t already. We will have the following dress up days next week:

  • Monday, December 20 - Dress like a Christmas Tree or elf
  • Tuesday, December 21 - Christmas Sweater day (ugly or beautiful)
  • Wednesday, December 22 - School uniform
  • Thursday, December 23 - $1.00 dress down day

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas” - Calvin Coolidge

News from the Classroom

Advent

Our classroom is our church

Advent is a time of expectation and hope as we await the birth of Christ on Christmas.

During the season of Advent we gather together around the Advent wreath and with candles lit, we join together in prayer in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family church sanctuary.

During this Third Week of Advent, we anticipate Christmas, and so we ask Christ to grant us His grace that we might be prepared for welcoming His Birth.

Computer Science for All

Computer Science

and

Little Bits

Our Computer Science Week had us learning about input, output, processing and so much more as we learn about the Little Bit blocks and what they do.

  • Light a light bulb (on/off, steady/pulse)
  • Temperature & light sensors
  • Circuits to power a fan, buzzer & motor

This week we continue to learn about the bricks and their functions in preparation for the project build we will be doing next week.

We learn and compare to real-life: windshield wipers, sensor night lights, extension cords, emergency lights and maybe we will create something new!

CodeWisco Week

December 6-10

Unplugged

Computer Science is a skill that we all experience and learn throughout our days.

In understanding how and why things work the way they do, we learn what is Computer Science. It requires planning, and investigating, problem solving and not being afraid to try and/or make a mistake.

In first grade, we tried an unplugged activity of actions including Forward, Backward, Left and Right to solve a maze. While one was simple, the other was a bit more difficult and also required us to remember our right and left! As we learn how to successfully solve the maze, we will try to solve a maze by programming a Bee Bot!
