Dear OLOL Families,
On behalf of the entire OLOL staff, we wish your family a Merry Christmas.
I hope that you have a relaxing Christmas and share Christmas joy with your family and friends. The OLOL staff, students, and families are such a blessing to me. You can be sure that all of you will continue to be in my heart and mind as I reflect on making the second half of the 2021-2022 school year rewarding for our students and families.
I heard a wonderful homily last week-end where I worship. The message centered on the two main bodies of water in the Holy Land, The Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. One is brimming with life and the other is absent of life. The main reason for the difference is one constantly has water flowing in and out and the other has no place for water to flow out. The priest challenged us to become more like the Sea of Galilee in terms of grace. We receive grace from God and others each and every day. To promote life we need to allow that grace to flow out of us to other and back to God.
I reflected on that message the rest of the day and thought we could expand that beyond grace. We are not designed to be “holding tanks”. Every feeling, disappointment, joy, and of course grace should flow in and out of us constantly. When we experience joy, we should take that joyful feeling and pass it on. Whenever we are given grace by God or someone else, that should be passed on as well. We should also allow disappointment and hurt to flow out of us. This doesn’t mean that when we are hurt by someone that we should go out and hurt others. That of course is wrong. We do need to have it flow out of us so we don’t allow ourselves to become bitter, disenchanted, and pessimistic. If you are looking for a New Year’s resolution, I think working on creating ourselves to become vehicles where God’s grace and love flows in and out might be a good resolution to work on.
The school office will be closed from December 24 through January 2. Christmas break hasn't even started but I’m already excited about having our students returning on January 3rd.
“It is not that we keep His Commandments first and then that He loves us but that He loves us and then we keep His Commandments. This is that grace which is revealed to the humbled but hidden from the proud” - Saint Augustine.
The Lourdes Way,
Jeffrey Young

Middle School Recess Change
Beginning Monday, January 3rd, OLOL is making a change to our middle school lunch recess. Middle school students will have the opportunity to remain inside on certain days to either complete homework assignments or just socialize with their classmates. We will have TWO indoor locations for middle school students. One location will be a quiet study room in which students may work on school assignments. The other location will be a room where students can talk and socialize with their friends. Phones will not be permitted in either location.
During the week of January 3-7, 7th and 8th grade graders can stay inside, if they wish, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The 5th and 6th graders can stay inside, if they wish, on Tuesday and Thursday. During the week of January 10-14, the days switch for which students can stay inside. We will continue alternating weeks throughout the school year. Our expectation is that middle school students will make good choices whether they are inside or outside.
Increasing these different options for students requires TWO parent volunteers each day. We are still looking for volunteers for our January recess and lunchroom schedule. If you haven’t signed up to volunteer or are able to increase the number of times that you are able to volunteer please contact Mrs. Hendricks at lhendricks@gracesystem.org or Mrs. Arkins at karifinnel@yahoo.com.

Student Council
Candy Cane Sale
The Student Council offered a candy Cane sale for students/faculty.
This year, over 1,200 candy canes were sold!
The money raised from the sale of the candy canes will allow the student council to purchase several comforters for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace - OLOL Advent project.
The remaining funds will be used to support other activities/donations for the remainder of the school year.
Thank you to everyone for supporting this project!

Computer Science
and
Little Bits
The majority of our classes completed their Computer Science unit with circuitry using Little Bits this week.
The final project was for each team to build a self-driving vehicle or Art Machine.
As we had practiced with all the Little Bit blocks, this week the students accepted the challenge to build. The were required to review the project specs, build, test, problem solve and modify to see if their build was successful with or without modifications.
Great teamwork everyone!

Challenge or Opportunity?
The students felt comfortable with the circuitry, but encountered issues with the mechanics, the foundation/board was not secure, which required some alternative measures to keep everything together. Rubber bands and tape were a necessary tool.
Upon return from Christmas break, we will evaluate these projects. Was the issue in the design, the components, construction or was more time needed?
