Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

Writing my weekly correspondence for the Lourdes Letter is something I look forward to but can also be challenging. I struggle with deciding what I would like to communicate with all of you. Each week there are many different directions and topics in which to share. I try to have a common thread in which every topic connects in some way. This week is not going to be one of those weeks. The topics vary and I won’t be able to connect them; it will be a potpourri of information.

I have great news regarding our fundraising efforts so far this year. The Night of Keys final numbers are in and we raised just short of $60,000, a new record! Thanks to all that participated and made it a record setting evening. When we combine the NOK with other fundraising that we did this year we are at our GRACE commitment of $77,000. This means that OLOL keeps all fundraising profits, that we raise in the remainder of the school year, which go directly to supporting the education of OLOL students. Great job everyone!! Thank You!

Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade girls basketball team for winning their tournament. Great job Cavaliers!! The 7th and 8th grade boys also had a very successful season as well. I would like to thank all the students that participated. I encourage all students to participate in extracurricular activities as these experiences make our students better prepared for the future.

Finally, I ask again that every school family makes a commitment to attend the 10:15AM Mass on Sunday, January 30th. This is the start of Catholic Schools Week and is our way to thank the OLOL Parish for their support of our school, students, and staff. Please plan on attending to say thank you!

Virtual Learning Expectation "Reminder"

It seems that we are at the height of the omicron COVID spread in Wisconsin. Here are OLOL’s expectation of virtual learning:

If a student is in quarantine due to a close contact; they are expected to attend all classes virtually throughout the day. If there is any reason that they cannot, a parent or guardian needs to communicate this to the classroom/homeroom or subject teacher.

If a student is out due to being COVID positive, they can attend classes if they feel healthy enough to do so. We ask that a parent or guardian emails the teacher the day of classes to let them know whether they plan to attend.

The other situation that we see is that a student has symptoms and needs to wait to get a test scheduled. We are asking that the families wait until a positive case is confirmed before we gather materials for virtual learning.

Computer Science for All

First Grade

Algorithms and BeeBots

First Grade is learning about algorithms and coding using two different types of hands-on experiences.

Algorithm definition: a process or set of rules in problem-solving operations.

Students began with an unplugged coding activity to learn how to code a solution to get from 'start' to 'end'. Commands were provided on paper, for students to place in order, to solve the problem.

What is unplugged coding? Unplugged coding refers to learning coding skills without the use of technology

Next, they assumed the roles of coder and debugger and coded the commands using the BeeBots. After some trial and error, they were all successful, which was enjoyed by all.

Great job students!

Little Bits

Project Builds

We have learned the various components of the Little Bits.

Students worked in teams to build a self-driving vehicle a self-driving vehicle or Art Machine.

Overall, our problem-solving and engineering skills were successful, however, we encountered issues with some components which prevented us from having a reliable machine/vehicle.
