Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

Catholic Schools Week is next week.  We have a week filled with activities and learning experiences that align with our mission statement.  Hopefully the students and families have a great week.  I do ask that you pray for good weather because in years past, the weather has made it a struggle.

Catholic Schools Week is important to me because it is a time when I think of all the people that make our school possible.  OLOL exists because of your support of our school.  I hope and pray that I communicate my deep appreciation for that.  Most times I talk about how your support influences the students and families of OLOL.  I view myself as a humble person so I try to stay away from any discussions about myself.  I am breaking from tradition this week so you can understand the impact that you have made on my life.

For a large portion of my life, I lacked direction, discipline, and focus.  I attended my 25th high school reunion a few years ago and I received an award as having the most unlikely job. That explains where I was back in high school and college.

With most late bloomers, I figured the chances of me making an impact in people’s lives were going to be slim.  The goal was going to hopefully start a family and provide love and financial support for them.  I think all of us at one time or another compare the life we have and the life we envision for ourselves.  I will say without a doubt my life has greatly exceeded the life that I thought I would have.  The main reason is because of the support and encouragement from OLOL Catholic School.  This school has provided me an opportunity to live a life that I never would have expected.  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I believe in Catholic education and more importantly the education here at OLOL.  I love being in a leadership position that embraces the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.  I know the education and values taught here makes lives better now, in high school, and beyond.  We will continue to improve and make changes that are good for our students and families.

I can’t thank you enough for allowing this kid from Illinois to have the opportunity to assist students, staff, and families to have fulfilling lives during their journey to the Kingdom of Heaven, God has established for us.  The only way I know to repay you is to continue to find a way everyday to create a school that promotes education and values that make a positive impact in people’s lives.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wisconsin Tax Deduction for Tuition Expense

Tax legislation signed into law gives Wisconsin taxpayers the opportunity to deduct private school tuition expenses from their taxable income. A subtraction from income is allowed for tuition expenses that are paid for any of the GRACE schools. Parents/guardians are eligible for a maximum deduction of $4,000 per child in grades K-8 and $10,000 per child in grades 9-12. Students transitioning from eighth to ninth grade are eligible for both deductions. Per state guidance, any amount spent on tuition and book fees are eligible for the deduction. Book fees include digital books, such as laptops or tablet fees issued by the school.

Tuition tax credit information is available to GRACE families online via GRACE’s enrollment management system, TADS. The TADS Household Paid Tuition Tax Report will provide a breakdown of payments made for the specified household’s tuition account during the tax year.

When gathering information for tax preparation, GRACE families are to access their TADS account | select Billing | Billing Account Number | Reports | Household Paid Tuition Tax Report | enter the tax year (i.e. 2021) and submit. If you have questions or require assistance, please call TADS Family Support at (800) 477-8237.

Counselor's Corner

Happy 2022!  Hope your new year is off to a fantastic start!   My year is off to a great start, though I will be happy to see these really cold temperatures go away.  I enjoy winter, just not the bitter cold.

I just wanted to share a few things that have been going on in my classes.  Before Christmas, we talked about gratitude and being grateful for what we have.  In addition we discussed empathy and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.  Realizing that at times, others may struggle and/or may not have the things we do.

In January, our focus has been academic success.  Lessons involving what a successful student looks like were part of our discussions.  Also, now that we are midway through the school year, students are identifying ways they can improve to be the best students they can be.  Each grade level had different lessons targeted around these concepts and many set goals to work on.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have a concern with your child that I may be able to help with. I am available at Notre Dame of De Pere on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and by email the other days.   Stay warm!

Fang Reading Club -- Starts Now!

Although it does not feel, (or look like), baseball season yet, the Fang Reading Club started on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade can once again have fun playing “baseball” by reading through the bases. After they read 200 minutes at home, within a two week period, they will slide onto a “base.” That’s only 20 minutes a day! Every two weeks they can read their way onto the next base by reading 200 more minutes. Then, hopefully they will make a “homerun” on March 11th.

Students who make it to home plate are rewarded with a free hot dog and drink, and a ticket to the OLOL Family Night game with the Timber Rattlers on Friday, May 6, 2022.

We hope all students in grades K-5 will “step up to the plate” and join in the fun! Look for more information on Fang Reading Club sheets below. If you have any questions, please contact your teacher or Ms. J. Johnson.

“Swing batter, batter, swing” … into reading with Fang and the Timber Rattlers!

Computer Science for All

Kindergarten programming BeeBots!

Computer Science in Kindergarten, what do we do?

We learn how to solve a maze using a software program on the computer in the lab.

Then, we program a maze using an unplugged activity (no computer needed). We used basic commands of arrow, turn right and turn left.

Now, we are ready to advance to program a Bee. It is a Bee-Bot with arrows and turns for us to program and then 'press go' to see if the Bee will follow the maze from start to finish.

The students did a great job! Their enthusiasm was contagious even when some debugging was needed,

Did you know that once a month a committee consisting of four individuals meet to discuss the Computer Science initiative at OLOL.

This month the discussions included:

  • Student template of technology skills
  • Review of the OLOL Computer Science standards.
  • Planning of how to integrate technology with Science and Social Studies curriculum.
  • Plan for the team teach model for next year.
  • Technology in the Encore classes.

We are excited as the Computer Science curriculum continues to evolve and the progress the students are displaying!

The future is bright in the ever changing world of technology!

Go Cavaliers!
