Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL families,

Thank you to all that attended the Night of Keys Saturday night and supported the event with a purchase, donation, sponsorship and sharing of your time/talent. Thank you to all who helped with set-up, working at the event, and cleaning up. It was a team effort and we so appreciate everyone's efforts.

The OLOL community owes Nicci Zwielfelhofer and Sara Lawler a big debt of gratitude. I know that they were working until the wee hours of the night last week getting us ready for the big event. They did a super job of having the evening go out without too many problems. Great job Nicci and Sarah! We thank you for your effort and leadership with this event.  Mrs. Lynn Fink spent considerable time getting all of the technology ready that we used that night. Thank you Mrs. Fink!  Mrs. Hendricks was kept very busy in the office making sure everything that came in went to the right place. Thank you Mrs. Hendricks!

As we await the final numbers, preliminary estimates indicate we had a very successful night in terms of raising money for our school. I believe that we are close to breaking the old record of amount raised.  Your generosity will directly benefit the students of OLOL.

As I mentioned in my address that night. The OLOL community is a very special community. I have been told by many parents, teachers, and strangers that I surely wouldn’t want your job over these past 2 years. I feel completely different. I have the best job in the world because of the students, families, staff, and OLOL Parish. To be able to work with these four amazing groups and to give the students of OLOL the best educational experience creates a tremendous sense of accomplishment and reward. This doesn’t mean we are perfect and there are times when we fall short of our goal. These four groups don’t quit and are resilient; a great gift to have and is an attribute that I feel all successful people have. The great majority of OLOL stakeholders have this important character trait.

The 1st trimester ends on Friday. Teachers will be working on report cards on Friday afternoon. Report cards will be sent be sent home with the students on Wednesday, November 24.

“Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again,

But the wicked stu when calamity strikes” Proverbs 24:16

Computer Science for All

Tech Time Tuesday

for Teachers

Once a month, the OLOL teachers meet before school for Tech Time in the computer lab.

An opportunity to review, learn and try something new.

This month's topics were:

  • PowerSchool report cards (review)
  • An overview of the ViewSonic Boards that are being purchased with the Packer Grant $$ OLOL received.
  • Google Books (books.google.com)A free resource to books, magazine and newspapers.

Once a month, the GRACE teachers also have an opportunity for a virtual Tech Time session, after school, with varying topics.

Thank you teachers for your dedication to learning to benefit the children!

The students in grades K-2 are practicing their computer use skills as we prepare for computer science activities in trimester 2.

  • Vocabulary is an important component of instruction.
  • How to login/use the computer or tablets.
  • Develop their mouse skill by practice drawing the lowercase and uppercase letters with their mouse.
  • Students use KidPix to share an idea while drawing with a mouse, colors and various online art tools.
  • Introduce the keyboard - home row. For first and second graders we are practicing how to use the shift key.

Parent Hints/Tips

to manage the digital world.

  • Treat media as you treat other environments in your child's life.
  • Set limits and encourage playtime.
  • Screen time shouldn't be alone time.
  • Be a good role model.
  • Stress the importance of face-to-face communication.
  • Create tech free zones.
  • Warn children about the importance of dangers of predators.
  • Remember, kids will be kids. Kids will make mistakes. Handle their errors with empathy and turn a mistake into a teachable moment.
