St. Ignatius Loyola 6th Grade Students Create & Implement The Greek Games!
|
|
The Greek Games is an exciting event the 6th graders planned as a extension project and culminating activity to their Ancient Greece Unit in Social Studies class. This was an entirely student-directed initiative. With teacher guidance, the students formed committees and diligently worked to prepare all the tasks at hand.
The students chose to be part of one of the following committees in preparation for hosting these Games: Audio/Visual, Team Information/Sashes, Games, Decorations, Awards, Feast/ Post-Celebration
All Middle School Teachers incorporated the Greek culture/Cooperative Project into their lessons in a variety of ways.
- Science - STEM Chariot Activity
- Math - 3D printing (with the help of 8th graders!) and measurement/averages
- Social Studies and Language Arts - Latin Roots
- Virtual Field Trip opportunities in several classes
- Reading - class study of the story entitled "Who created Democracy?" in our Reading anthology
The two-day event took place at the end of February, with the first day being the Greek Games in the gymnasium, and the second day being the Greek Feast in the meeting rooms. The Greek Games were a huge such a success! We hope this is the beginning of an annual tradition
for our future Sixth Graders here at St. Ignatius!
