Gospel Reading for Sunday, March 17 th , 2019

Second Sunday of Lent

Covenant Ritual

  • Have you ever been covered in mud? How did it feel after you bathed and put on clean clothing?
  • Who did the disciples think Jesus was? Was it hard for them to think of him as the Messiah?
  • How did Jesus show them who he truly was?

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.
A Note from the Principal:

Dear SJE Parents,

As many of you know, last spring we applied for and were awarded a safety grant from the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice. We used this grant money to install an updated PA system in our school. Not only does this PA system work reliably, we now have the ability to program in zoned bells allowing us to use a separate tone to end classes for our fifth through eighth graders, we moved our microphone into the outer office for ease of access, and perhaps most important, we added call buttons into each of our classrooms. Those of you who attended our craft fair or Paczki with Pop may have even noticed that we can also play music into different zones of our building. As you can imagine, we love our new PA system!!

When the PA project was completed, we were left with approximately $4500 in grant money which was allocated but had not been spent. We are excited to announce that we will be using this money to install cameras into the main hallways of our school. These cameras will allow us to track activity at the main entrances to our school (particularly important to us because our office door is around the corner from our main school door) as well as the entrances from the church into the school building. In addition, the base system for these cameras will allow us to expand the system to include other areas of the building if additional money becomes available.

We expect these cameras to be installed later this spring. We are so grateful for these new upgrades.  They allow us to focus on our goal of educating our students while ensuring a safe, secure environment.

Please join us!

We will be gathering in church on these Fridays during Lent to pray the Stations of the Cross:

Friday, March 22, Friday, March 29th, Friday, April 5th, and Friday, April 12th.

Families are invited to join us for this unique prayer experience. Please feel comfortable bringing your little ones as well as grandparents along to this family-friendly prayer. All are welcome!
St. Joseph's Table

On March 19th, it has been our tradition to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph with a “Saint Joseph’s Day" Table. This is a tradition the people in Italy started in the middle ages. The story goes that there was a great drought and the people prayed for St Joseph to intervene.  They promised, if rain came, they would prepare a big feast in his honor. Their prayers were answered. In gratitude, huge banquet tables were set up in public and poor people were invited to come and eat as much as they wanted. Since then many nations share with the poor and needy on March 19th, St. Joseph’s Feast Day.

On Tuesday, March 19th, we will be filling our own “St. Joseph’s Table” with a student bake sale. All the proceeds from this bake sale will support our Water to Thrive Well project, helping to bring clean water to villages in Africa.

This year, we are excited to anchor our St. Joseph’s Table with a Saint Joseph Altar, providing a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore the faith traditions that support this event.

In order to make this bake sale a success, each family is asked to donate homemade baked goods of their choice. For example, a dozen of one of the following: cookies, cupcakes, brownies, bars. Because some of our students gave up sweets for Lent, we also welcome muffins or banana bread, small bags of popcorn, etc.

Your donation can be dropped off at the school office on Tuesday morning, March 19th.  It should be packaged in individual plastic baggies  to make it easy for our students to transport their purchases to their rooms. Please label any items with nuts or peanut butter. With your help our students can enjoy treats and honor St. Joseph’s memory with a generous donation for those who do not have easy access to clean water.

Financial Aid Applications are now available
Families are invited to apply for financial aid grants for the upcoming year. Our website has been updated with applications for our own tuition angel fund, as well as information on the St. Gerard Fund. Last year, we dispersed nearly $20,000 from our Angel fund, and our students received an additional $8800 in financial aid from the St. Gerard Fund.

Tuition Angel Fund grants must be turned in no later than May 1 st .   Completed St. Gerard applications must be turned into the school office no later than Monday, April 9 th .

Water to Thrive

Each year, our students tackle a service project during Lent. This year we have chosen to work on supporting the installation of a well in Africa. During the season of Lent we will be educating our students about water consumption and access to water throughout the world.

We are working with the organization “Water to Thrive” based in Austin, TX. 100% of our project donations will go towards a specific well that will be built using our funds. The cost of one well is $5,000. We will continue to raise funds through this school year and if needed into the next school year. Please use this link to contribute directly to our campaign. And please share this link with family and friends who can also contribute on our behalf.

Cash and checks received in the office will be sent to Water to Thrive and will be credited to our campaign.

In addition, students are bringing home an order form for Water to Thrive t-shirts. Students may wear these t-shirts with their uniforms on Thursdays throughout the school year. Orders are due on March 22nd.
Our Home and School Needs Your Help!!

On Friday, March 29 th , our Home and School will be sponsoring our parish fish fry. Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. Please consider signing up to help serve fish, man our drink station, or supervise our student helpers! Watch for the sign up genius document to schedule your time to help.
Last Call for Yearbooks!

If you would to order a yearbook, please do so by Monday, March 18th.
Forward Exam Update

Our third through eighth graders are exploring the Forward exam through the practice test tools. They are discovering that this test will challenge not only their knowledge, but also their ability to read and follow directions in new and different ways. You can help by providing time for your student to practice for the Forward Exam at home.

We need your help!!

Do you have a smartphone? Do you shop for groceries? Then you can help earn money for our school. Just download the Shoparoo app, photograph your grocery store receipts, and start earning money for our school. Last year, with only about a dozen supporters, we earned more than $200. Imagine what we could do if all of our families participated!
