Family Sunday Readings

Second Sunday of Advent

Reading I : Isaiah 11:1-10

The wolf shall be a guest of the lamb.

  • The reading from Isaiah describes the expected Emmanuel God with us.
  • The reign of Emmanuel will be harmonious, just, and peace-filled. The one who comes will be a person of justice and wisdom.
  • The characteristics or qualities of Emmanuel are what Christians today identify as the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Reading II : Romans 15:4-9

Accept one another, as Christ accepted you.

  • In the passage from the Letter to the Romans, Paul urges the strong to carry the burdens of the weak, to follow the example of Christ, who became the servant of all.
  • Followers of Christ ought to build the community and its members up rather than tear it down.
  • Paul calls for unity and acceptance, between the Gentile Christians who were the majority and the Jewish-Christian minority.

Gospel : Matthew 3:1-12

Reform your lives!

  • In the Gospel of Matthew, John the Baptist is introduced preaching a message of conversion: “Reform your lives! The reign of God is at hand.”
  • John the Baptists’ preaching demanded a radical conversion of the whole person to God.
  • John baptized the people in the River Jordan as a symbolic washing that signified their repentance, but this is a Jewish, not a Christian baptism. On this Sunday, we focus on preparation for Christ.

"Live a life that reflects God's love."

Romans 12:10

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf

First Mass of Christmas Eve

Earlier this fall, we received a message from Archbishop Grob that, if needed for pastoral reasons, he would give parishes a dispensation to have an earlier time for the First Mass of Christmas Eve. Father Michael did ask for this dispensation, given the needs, particularly of the ministries involved in all of our Christmas Masses. He granted us this request, which means our First Mass of Christmas Eve, December 24, will be at 3:00 p.m. instead of the usual 4:00 p.m. For those who attend this Mass, please mark your calendars.

ADVENT

Our Advent theme is “Be a Gift”. The theme is Inspired by 1 Peter 4:10 “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

Each day, our students will receive an Advent mission (prayer or action) to complete. The mission is introduced each day during announcements by a member of our NJHS student leadership team. When a student completes the daily mission they will write what they did on a gift tag and drop it in that Saint’s gift bag. As our students complete their daily missions, they are preparing their souls for the coming of Jesus during the season of Advent.

NJHS Advent Collection

Our NJHS group will also be collecting food to create Holiday Food Boxes. The national Junior Honor Society is asking for your family’s help as they work to collect items to assist 25 needy families.

Please see flyer in today’s Thursday folder to see how you can help.

Advent Wreath

Traditionally, Advent wreaths consist of a circle of evergreen branches with four candles inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Three candles are purple, and one is rose, but white candles can also be used. The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass. Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over, and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

Report cards

It is hard to believe the school year is a third of the way complete. Report cards will be sent home today, December 4. Please review the report card with your child. Keep the report card for your records.

Please sign the report card envelope and have your child return it to his or her teacher.

Cold Weather and Outside

All students are expected to go outside for recess. The office has received requests to keep students in for recess because the child is getting over a cold or has not been feeling well. Due to limited staff availability we will not be able to fulfill these requests. Unfortunately, if your child is not healthy enough to go outside for recess, he or she should be kept home for the day.

Please make sure your child has warm clothing for recess, i.e. winter coat, snow pants, boots, hat, scarf, and gloves. We will always go out for recess unless the Real Feel Temperature is 0 Degrees or below. We do have a supply of winter wear for those occasions when a student may have forgotten or lost a hat or gloves, but the supply is limited.

READING ROCKSTARS!

Each month students in grades 2-8 set reading goals. The class with the highest percentage of students reaching their goals receives the traveling trophy for the month. Our 4th graders are our Reading Rockstars for November!

Great job 4th grade!

Tardiness

When students are often late, they miss valuable instruction and can feel rushed or disconnected from their classmates. Over time, frequent tardiness can lead to learning gaps, increased stress, and lower academic performance. It can also affect classroom flow and distract other students. By making punctuality a family priority, you’re helping your child—and their classmates—start each day strong and ready to learn.

This week, November 11/24, 11/25 and 12/1-12/4, St. John the Evangelist School had 118 students arrive late to school.
