Family Sunday Readings

Third Sunday of Advent

Reading I : Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10

The desert will rejoice and bloom!

  • The prophet Isaiah encourages the Jewish people living in exile in Babylon, to believe that God has the power and the desire to save them.
  • The images in the first reading convey new life and hope. This foreshadows what Christians will see in Christ.
  • The prophet’s message brings comfort to those in need of liberation.

Reading II : James 5:7-10

Be patient.

  • The Letter of James urges patience in awaiting the second coming of Christ.
  • Just as the farmer needs to be patient, trust God, and cooperate with the natural elements, so must the Christian.
  • We are called to wait with patience and to hasten the Kingdom through works of mercy.

Gospel : Matthew 11:2-11

The blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, and deaf hear.

  • Today’s Gospel describes what kind of Messiah Jesus is.
  • By listing his works of healing and restoration in response to John’s question, Jesus shows how he fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament regarding the Messiah, as suggested in today’s first reading.
  • Jesus identifies John as his forerunner.

"Live a life that reflects God's love."

Let’s Work Together to Reduce Tardiness

Each morning sets the tone for a successful school day, and arriving on time helps students start calm, confident, and ready to learn. Frequent tardiness can cause students to miss important instructions, disrupt classroom routines, and make it harder for them to stay on track academically and socially. Please help us by ensuring your child arrives at school on time each day. A few extra minutes in the morning can make a big difference in their overall success. Thank you for your partnership!

This week, December 5 and December 8-11- St. John the Evangelist School had 87 students arrive late to school.

Remember the doors open at 7:30 am and the students are to be in class by 7:45 am.

Classroom Treats policy change

The policy on birthday treats has been changed. The policy currently states homemade treats are not allowed. The new policy will allow homemade as well as store- bought birthday and classroom treats. The change in policy will be effective 12/12/25 and will be changed in the 2026-2027 parent handbook.

Please see the new policy here:

Homemade birthday or store bought classroom treats are allowed, as long as they are clearly labeled with a full list of ingredients. This helps us protect students with food allergies and dietary restrictions.

All classroom treats—homemade or store-bought—must be coordinated with your child’s teacher in advance. The teacher will confirm whether there are allergy concerns in the class and that the treat is appropriate for all students.

If you prefer a non-food option birthday treat, items such as stickers, pencils, or small toys are also encouraged as fun and inclusive alternatives.

Parents or guardians of children with allergies or dietary restrictions may choose to provide a separate, alternate treat for their own child on birthday celebration or treat days.

Mrs. Kazik was Nominated

Catholic Financial Life's “Give Back” Contest honors teachers for their remarkable dedication to transforming their students' lives. One of our very own St. John’s Parish School teachers, Mrs. Kazik, was nominated. You may vote for her once per day per device through Friday, December 19.

Also, if your child has been in Mrs. Kazik's second-grade class, please share your thoughts when voting, as these stories and comments are taken into consideration by the judges, as well as the vote tally.

Three outstanding teachers will each receive a $500 cash prize, and their schools will receive a $4,000 donation to support their mission. Let's get Mrs. Kazik into the top three.

Cold Weather and Outside

Please make sure your child has warm clothing for recess, i.e. winter coat, snow pants, boots, hat, scarf, and gloves. We will always go out for recess unless the Real Feel Temperature is 0 Degrees or below. We do have a supply of winter wear for those occasions when a student may have forgotten or lost a hat or gloves, but the supply is limited.

Illness and Medication

It is the responsibility of parents to keep children home from school when they are too ill to participate in school activities. Fever, nausea, rashes, earaches, etc. are symptoms that a parent should check before sending a child to school.

No child with a fever of 100 degrees or higher should be sent to school. Once the child is free of a fever, without medication, for 24 hours, he/she may return to school.

A child who is vomiting or experiencing diarrhea must be kept home from school. Prior to returning to school, he/she must be free of such symptoms for 24 hours.

Except for first aid, treatment for illness or bodily injury may not be given by school personnel. School personnel may only administer medication with an approved Medication Authorization form on file.

First Mass of Christmas Eve

Earlier this fall, we received a message from Archbishop Grob that, if needed for pastoral reasons, he would give parishes a dispensation to have an earlier time for the First Mass of Christmas Eve. Father Michael did ask for this dispensation, given the needs, particularly of the ministries involved in all of our Christmas Masses. He granted us this request, which means our First Mass on Christmas Eve, December 24, will be at 3:00 p.m. instead of the usual 4:00 p.m. For those who attend this Mass, please mark your calendars.
