Family Sunday Readings

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Malachi 3:19-20a

The sun of justice will arise.

  • This reading from the Book of the prophet Malachi, was written during the fifth century B.C.
  • The people had slipped into complacency, again.
  • Malachi remindes them that the day of the Lord was coming.

Reading II : 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12

Work is a noble, good thing.

  • The Thessalonians expected the second coming of Christ to arrive immediately.
  • Some had stopped working and were simply waiting.
  • Paul urges them to imitate him and continue to do what is right.

Gospel : Luke 21:5-19

Your endurance will win you your life.

  • This gospel passage is Luke’s version of Jesus' apocalyptic discourse concerning the end of the world.
  • Two sets of images are interwoven. They include the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 by the Romans and the coming of the Son of Man at the end of time.
  • By the time the Gospel of Luke was written, it was evident that the return of the Son of Man was not going to happen immediately. Luke encourages Christians to persevere in faithfulness so that they will always be ready.

"Live a life that reflects God's love."

Romans 12:10

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf

Grandparents/ VIP Day

On November 5 we celebrated Saints and invited Grandparents / VIPs to join us. Many of our students dressed as Saints and our 3rd graders did a great job of preparing and leading our Mass celebration. Our VIPs/ Grandparents not only joined us for Mass, but also joined us for lunch, a bingo session, and to see their grandchild's classroom. The bingo hall (our gym) was filled with laughter and cheers as each number was called. The food was great, bingo was fun, and the Saint participation was awesome, but the best part of the day was seeing the joy on the faces of all in attendance. Thank you to all of the VIPs/ Grandparents who joined our celebration.

A big shout to our Home and School Committee for their time and efforts in making the event a great experience for our grandparents, VIPs, staff and students. They are awesome and our school community is truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of parents to host and help at these special events.

Here are some pictures of our Saints.

Car Line ID Displayed

On Monday of this week many families with their Car Line ID displayed on their passenger side visor received a family out-of-uniform pass. The Car Line ID helps teachers direct students to their cars so that the line can continue moving. Please display the ID that was mailed to you in the summer. If you need a replacement, please contact the school office. The Car Line ID also is very helpful in the cold or rainy weather when we are dismissed from the gym and only a few teachers are outside in the elements. Please help us by displaying your Car Line ID. .

Jackets, gloves, and hats- Winter is here!

As we move toward winter, students need to dress for the weather. There were a few chilly days this week and few students were not dressed for the cooler temperatures. The wind whips across our playground some days making it feel even cooler. Please send your child with a jacket, hat, and gloves. It is better to have these things and not need them than to need them and not have them. We do have a limited amount of items to loan out in emergency situations, but not enough for everyone.

Let’s Be On Time-

Arriving to school on time sets the tone for a successful day of learning. When students arrive promptly, they are able to start the day calm, organized, and ready to participate. Being on time helps students develop responsibility and good habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. It also ensures they don’t miss important morning routines, announcements, or lessons that lay the foundation for the rest of the day.

This week, November 10–13, St. John the Evangelist School had 39 students arrive late to school. Frequent tardiness affects not only your child’s learning but also the overall classroom environment. Please help us improve this number by ensuring your child arrives on time each day, ready to learn and start the day with their classmates. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting a positive and productive learning environment for all students.

Wellness Policy 2025 Triennial Review

A triennial review of a wellness policy is a mandatory, three-year assessment for schools that participate in federal child nutrition programs to evaluate their local wellness policy's compliance, progress, and effectiveness. The review involves checking that the policy meets USDA regulations, measuring how well the school is putting the plan into practice, and ensuring the policy is made available to the public. It's a required component to show progress and identify areas for improvement in the school's wellness environment.

The SJE School Advisory Commission reviewed our wellness policy and practice through a series of meetings starting in May of 2025 and concluding in November of 2025. Please use the link below to view our triennial report.
