Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
  • In the first reading, Isaiah preaches to people who are discouraged by war and oppression.
  • Among the first regions taken in the war were three sections of the northern Kingdom.
  • The prophet promises that God will again restore the land.

Let there be no factions among you.
  • In today’s second reading Paul gives his reaction to the divisions among the Corinthians.
  • The factions in the Corinthian church were dividing Christ’s Body.
  • Paul insists that through Baptism all become members of one body, the Body of Christ.

Come with me.
  • Because a majority of Matthew’s audience seems to have been Jewish Christians, the passage from Isaiah is used in today’s Gospel to explain the fact that Jesus’ ministry began in Galilee, not Jerusalem.
  • The substance of Jesus’ preaching is summarized, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
  • Jesus’ preaching calls for a radical change, the old way of living must be abandoned and a new way embraced.
A Message from
Mrs. Laidlaw Otto
Dear SJE Families;

This weekend marks the beginning of National Catholic Schools Week. Next week we will celebrate our school and parish community. Nearly forty years as a Catholic educator has earned me the right to say that I truly understand what makes Catholic Schools different. The opportunity to teach children how to read has drawn millions of men and women to the profession of teaching, but it’s the chance to help a child grow in faith and spirit that sets Catholic education apart. We are fond of telling our students that we are all saints in the making. What a wonderful vocation it is to gather these young minds, bodies, and spirits around us and teach them what it means to be Catholic citizens of the world. Our teachers are not lucky to be here; they are blessed. We are guided by our faith to support your amazing children on the road to a life filled with struggle and success, all the while on the path that Jesus has set for us. So, when someone asks you why you choose Catholic education for your child – why you make the daily sacrifices necessary to provide your child with an education at St. John the Evangelist, please remind them – we are all saints in the making. Our path to heaven is clear, and a Catholic education is one of the lights along the way.

We are truly growing in God’s Love,

Mary Laidlaw Otto
