Family Prayer

Gospel Reading for Sunday, January 27th, 2019

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Baptized into One Body

Questions for Family Discussion: (based on the second reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians)

  • What part of our human body lets us smell things?
  • What part do we carry with?
  • What part do we hear with?
  • What part do we walk with?
  • What does Paul tell us about the church? How are we all parts of the church?
  • What do you think your job is within the church?

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.

A Note from the Principal:

 Dear SJE Parents,

Today’s electronic mailer includes a schedule of events for Catholic Schools Week. Please take time to review the plans for the week with your students. We are out of uniform with a different theme on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. On Wednesday, we will celebrate mass in our uniforms. In addition, we have a wide variety of activities planned for our students. There will be treats, time with buddies, and time for prayer.

Each year as we prepare for our Open House and school celebrations, I pause to reflect on my career in Catholic Education.  This year, I have been wondering how to communicate to all of you about the gift of our school. It’s hard for our students to understand exactly how special their education at SJE is. As I write this note to you, we are in the middle of a snowy Wednesday. Our students came to school when some of their neighboring Catholic Schools were closed for the weather. At lunch today, I was speaking with the students about their day. As is my practice. I asked what they love, what they dislike, and what does not interest them.  The students I spoke to were happy to be in school, even knowing that many of their friends at other Catholic Schools were off. There was plenty of moaning among our older students who didn’t get to sleep in, but once that was over, they talked about following their routines, completing assigned tasks and spending the day with friends.

I was a bit surprised today when I asked some of our younger students how their days were going. Of course, they were so excited to play in the snow! Giant snow forts were everywhere when I ventured out on the playground during our morning recess. It’s fun to watch the unplanned science lessons that happen when students are given snow to play with. What surprised me the most, though, was how many of our youngest learners told me about going to mass. I heard kindergarten narratives of the homily, describing the lessons taught by Father Michael and our second graders. I heard about the opportunity to sit with big buddies and singing along with the choir. I heard  pure joy  from these small children as they described their experience during liturgy. Slowly, throughout these conversations, I was reminded of why I am a Catholic Educator.  As I left the cafeteria, I realized what my message to you during Catholic Schools Week must be. Our children are blessed to receive a Catholic education, and we are blessed to provide it for them. We are all truly the hands and hearts of God, helping our saints in the making take their first, second, and third steps towards heaven. It is a long journey, but together we are all up to the challenge. And that, my SJE Family, is what makes SJE and our Catholic Education special.

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Mary Laidlaw Otto
