Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

To be like God is to be loving.
  • Leviticus 19 is a collection of miscellaneous laws concerning conduct.
  • Keeping the Ten Commandments, worshiping God, and living justly were prescribed.
  • The reason for all the laws is to be like God.

To love one another is to live.
  • Wisdom had divided the community.
  • Worldly wisdom is folly to God.
  • Obey God and be like God. To be like God is to love one another.

Forgive and love to conquer evil.
  • The Old Testament "an eye for an eye," was an attempt to limit evil.
  • Monetary fines had become more common.
  • Jesus advised that evil is conquered by good.

A Message from
Mrs. Laidlaw Otto
Dear SJE Families;

It’s hard to believe that Lent will be starting next week.  Before the start of the Lenten season, we have two celebrations to look forward to.  Our second annual Small Plates, Big Hearts event will be held right here at SJE on Saturday night. This Mardi Gras themed event will feature food stations, music, raffle, and auction items (several of which have been crafted by our wonderful students). It’s not too late to register for the event and spend a fun evening with our school and parish community, while helping to provide financial support for our school programs.

Next week we will celebrate our second annual Paczki with Pop. Our dads, uncles, grandpas and friends are welcome to join us for some early morning treats in our cafeteria.  7:00 AM may seem awfully early to come to school, but we promise hot coffee for the grownups, milk for the children, and paczki for all! What a great opportunity to spend some time together.

Thanks to our hardworking SPBH committee, as well as our Home and School hospitality committee. We are so blessed to have these hardworking folks planning such fun events for all of us.

Lent is a time of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer for our students.  Next Tuesday we will kick off the Lenten season with an all school prayer pod activity. Students will bring home a sheet of daily Lenten activities on Tuesday. Please take a look at this sheet and consider what your family can work on during Lent.

Go Forth and Be a Blessing,

Mary Laidlaw Otto
St. John the Evangelist is in need of help in our after-school care program.

Paige Lobenhofer, our after-school care helper, will be moving on to a new job within the next couple of weeks. We are so grateful to Paige for her help with our program. We are going to miss her! Paige’s departure will leave us in need of help. This is the perfect position for a recent high school grad, a college student, or even a recently retired grandparent. Please help us by reaching out to your friends and family with this opportunity.

The after-school helper supports the director of the program in providing a safe, fun program for our students each school day from 2:30 PM until approximately 6:00 PM. Employees must be willing to supervise students outdoors as well as engage in indoor activities such as board games.

To apply, or for more information, please call the school office at 414-321-8540.

Calling All Babysitters!

Occasionally the parents of our younger students ask if we know of any trained babysitters. Although we do not want to be in the business of matching sitters with families, we would love to have some names and phone numbers of families with older children who are experienced sitters.
If you have an older child who is a trained babysitter and would like their name included on a list which we will make available to families upon request, please email the information to our school office ( ).  We will compile the list here and pass it along to families as they request it. With our Small Plates Big Hearts event coming soon we know that our families will be looking for qualified sitters.
Paczki with Pop!

Last week's paper envelope included an invitation to our second annual  “Paczki with Pop”  event. Our Home and School will welcome students with their dads for an early morning breakfast treat of paczki, juice, and coffee on Tuesday , February 25th, in our school cafeteria from 7:00 AM to 7:40 AM . Simply complete and send it to the office. All RSVPs should be returned to the school office no later than Friday, February 21st. Dads and Granddads will not want to miss this opportunity to share doughnuts and conversation with their students!
Boxtops Contest

Time is running out! The next deadline for submitting boxtops is quickly approaching.

Each year our school earns more than $1000 simply because our families and friends clip and save boxtops for us. These little boxtops, available on a variety of food items, are worth 10 cents each. They really add up!

We are collecting boxtops through tomorrow, Friday, February 21st.  Please send boxtops to school in an envelope or a baggie clearly marked with your family names. All families who send in boxtops will be entered into a drawing for a $25 SCRIP card of their choice.
Toiletry Drive Update

Our Toiletry Drive for St. Ben's and the House of Peace is more than half way over. Your continued support is terrific! Let's keep up the giving spirit as we end this week and enter our final week of collecting.

Last week, Ms. Schein's K5 students and Mrs. Prideaux's 1st grade class both showed tremendous spirit in collecting shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, and deodorant. Both classes will receive Root Beer Floats as a reward for their generosity to help others in need.

Tomorrow is the last day to donate razors, shaving cream, baby wipes, and hand sanitizer.

Our collection focus for our final week is all things related to teeth and dental health. Let's fill our collection boxes with toothbrushes, tooth paste, and dental floss. Your class could earn an Out-of-Uniform Pass for your hard work.
