Family Prayer

First Sunday of Lent

Reading I : Deuteronomy 26:4-10

Worship the Lord your God.

  • Today's reading from the Book of Deuteronomy reflects the central beliefs of the Israelites.
  • The people offered a portion of the first harvest of the year to acknowledge that the land belonged to God.
  • The recited creed was an expression of gratitude to God.

Reading II : Romans 10:8-13

There is only one God.

  • The passage from the Letter to the Romans stresses Paul’s belief that Jesus is Lord.
  • Jesus trusted in God, his Father, and was raised from the dead.
  • What we must do to share in that salvation is simply to believe in the risen Lord.

Gospel : Luke 4:1-13

Jesus is led into the desert and tempted.

  • In today’s Gospel passage, the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
  • Just as God led Israel out of Egypt, nourished them for forty years in the desert, and gave them the Promised Land, so God would care for Jesus during and after his forty days in the desert.
  • Jesus passed the test because his trust in God never wavered.

Monday Morning Prayer Service

Each Monday morning we start our week with a prayer service in our gym. Students sit with their buddies. The prayer service is prepared by our teachers, and different classes lead it each week. The prayer service starts shortly after 7:45 as students need time to transition from their classrooms to the gym. It is a great way to start our week.

I would like to extend an invitation to you to join us for our Monday morning prayer services. Please feel free to join us each Monday for prayer. If interested in praying with us, please drop your student off in the car line before 7:45 so they are on time for school. Then circle around the building to the south lot, park and enter through door #6. Please sign in at the office and head to the gym. Chairs will be set up for you. Feel free to join us any Monday for the rest of the year.

Please join us for Stations of the Cross

During Lent, our students lead us in the Stations of the Cross each Friday at 2:00. Please join us for the Stations of the Cross. If you do attend, please use the Adoration door on the southside of the building.

Schedule for leading Stations of the Cross:

3/14 - Gr.8 3/21 - Gr. 7 3/28 - Gr. 6 4/4 - Gr. 5 4/11 - Gr. 4

SJE National Junior Honor Society Lent Collection

The season of Lent started yesterday. At the Monday morning prayer service this week, we introduced our Lenten theme, Be Merciful Just as your Father is Merciful. Our focus this year will be to link some of the miracles Jesus performed with the Corporal Works of Mercy. We will encounter a new story and a new work of mercy each Monday. Our NJHS team, assisted by our girl scouts, will lead our school in our annual Lenten collection.

As part of our Lenten experience, the NJHS has invited the SJE community to participate in our service-learning project, Be Merciful Compassion in Action, to benefit Catholic Charities and other local food pantries and shelters. Each week our collection suggestions will relate to the Corporal Work of Mercy we have focused on at the prayer service. Please see the flyer for items that are being collected each week. Hopefully your child can earn some money to help with the cost of donating requested items at least one week during our Lenten collection.
