Fourth Sunday of Advent

Reading I :  Isaiah 7:10-14
She shall name him Emmanuel.
  • Isaiah’s message to Ahaz is to watch for signs of God’s work.
  • The sign Isaiah describes, that a virgin shall be with child is used in the Gospel of Matthew to show Mary’s virginal conception of Jesus as a fulfillment of this text.
  • The name of the child, Emmanuel means “God with us.”

Reading II :  Romans 1:1-7
In him we have been given the gift of being apostles.
  • In the introduction to the Letter to the Romans, Paul reflects on the identity of Jesus.
  • Jesus is a son of David “according to the flesh”—thus he is the Christ, the Messiah.
  • Jesus is also the Son of God. Through his Resurrection, he has acquired the title Lord.

Gospel :  Matthew 1:18-24
God is with us.
  • Matthew gives a genealogy for Jesus that assures us that Jesus is a son of David, because his legal father, Joseph, is of the house of David.
  • In today’s Gospel, Joseph is also instructed to trust.
  • The name Jesus is related to the Hebrew word “savior.”
A Message from
Mrs. Laidlaw Otto
Dear SJE Families;

Each year I set a goal for a peaceful, prayer filled Advent season. Over the years, my time away from school has certainly become significantly more relaxed. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is still busy, but time to stop and take in the beautiful messages of Advent and the blessings of Christmas is definitely more abundant than when we were raising a child. Here at school, though, Advent continues to pass by in a flurry of planning and execution of many different activities.  Our students are so busy learning, growing, and enjoying the season. Last night’s Christmas program was a huge success. Today our students took time to pray together while they experienced what it might have been like for Mary and Joseph to make their long journey to Bethlehem. Before we dismiss for Christmas break at 2:45 on Friday, students will take plenty of time to celebrate together. After a well-deserved Christmas break, we will be right back at it on Monday, January 6th, ready to take on the challenges and blessings that 2020 will bring.

Shortly after we return, our students will participate in our second round of Star testing. It will be wonderful to learn about their growth when we meet for conferences on Thursday, January 23rd.

During January we will be preparing for the beginning of our re-enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year. The highlight of this process is our Open House, scheduled for Saturday, January 25th, from 2:00 to 4:30. Mark your calendars for this event, including the opportunity to tour our classrooms, celebrate 4:30 parish mass, and enjoy a spaghetti dinner provided by our Home and School Association. You won’t want to miss this! This is a wonderful opportunity to bring friends along to see what our school has to offer. Please consider reaching out to share our wonderful school.

Wishing you all the blessings of Christmas and many joys in 2020.

Mary Laidlaw Otto
We are so excited to welcome a new third grader to our school. Niamh Corales, daughter of Rouina and Noel Caballero, joined our third-grade class last Monday. What a wonderful Christmas gift for our third graders!
Calendar Raffles

Do you still have calendar raffles to turn in? Please be aware that payment and stubs for all sold calendar raffles MUST be turned in to the Parish Office by noon on December 31st. State law prohibits us from accepting any late entries. Thank you.
Here are a couple of pictures from last night's Christmas Program. It was truly beautiful! A special thank you to Ms. Mary Skalecki and the rest of our faculty for putting this together. It was well worth all the work!
