Gospel Reading for Sunday, January 13th, 2019
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Here is your God!

Questions for Family Discussion:

  • Have you ever seen a baby baptized?
  • What do you remember about it?
  • Why do you think the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove over Jesus?
Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear SJE Parents,

Happy New Year!

We were hard at work over Christmas vacation.

Thanks to our Athletic Association, we have a brand new bubbler with a water bottle filler located in our gym lobby.   In addition, thanks to our parish, we have installed energy efficient LED lighting throughout our building. Our students and teachers are amazed at the difference the new lights have made, particularly at this dreary time of year.

We are so grateful for our New Year’s blessings.

Growing in God’s Love,
Mary Laidlaw Otto

Catholic Schools Week & Open House

All students and families are invited to join us on Saturday afternoon, January 26 th , from 3:00 – 4:30 PM. Our classrooms will be open, and our teachers and students will be on hand to share their learning with you. What a great opportunity to grab a glimpse into your child’s school day. Following the Open House, families are invited to stay for 4:30 mass, followed by a spaghetti dinner hosted by our Home and School Committee.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity for fellowship with our other school families (not to mention an amazing meal!) Our Home and School is funding this event. All you need to do is complete and return the flier enclosed in this week’s paper envelope so that we can get a count of guests.

We will begin to enroll families for the 2019-2020 school year during Catholic Schools Week. Our current parents are the best advocates for our school. This year, each family is invited to bring a guest family to our Open House, and to our spaghetti dinner. Please consider inviting your friends to find out about our exemplary school.

Our school has so much to offer, however we are only as strong as our families. I am asking that each of our current families join us for both of our two upcoming events, and that you share the good news with friends and relatives.  Your support is crucial to our success.
With the new year upon us, we can all benefit from a reminder about safety, both in our building and in our parking lot.

Building Safety

Beginning immediately, we will be locking our outside entrance doors at 7:45 promptly. Students who are tardy (entering the building after 7:45), should enter at door #6 and ring the buzzer to be let in. This change in protocol will ensure that there is always adequate adult supervision in the hallway when the doors are unlocked. Parents are encouraged to make every effort to get their child to school prior to the first bell at 7:40.
Parking Lot Safety

The speed limit on SJE grounds is 10 miles per hour. Please be mindful of this!

Enter from Cold Spring Road.   Please DO NOT enter the school parking lot from 84 th  street. Making a “u-turn” in the parking lot is dangerous.
Drivers are asked to pull up to the end of the entrance sidewalk before stopping to let their children exit the car. Please encourage students to exit the car quickly and walk straight into the building.

After dropping students off, cars should exit slowly through the 84 th  Street exit.
Door #6, on the south side of the building, is for parents who are entering the building with their child only. If you are dropping off a young child who requires an escort into the building, please park in the door # 6 lot and walk in with your child. You must leave your car parked in a parking spot if you are going to enter door #6 at any time during the school day.

Many of you will read this and assume that it does not apply to you. However, it is the responsibility of all our families to keep our children safe. Following these rules helps to ensure a safe, happy environment for all our families.
Cold Weather is Here!

After an unseasonably warm start to the new year, the cold,
wintry weather is here!
We enjoy outdoor recess whenever the wind chill is above 0° F.
Therefore, we ask that all students come prepared with the following items:
Warm jacket, Snow pants, Boots, Hats, Mittens
Please remember, we DO NOT allow students to share hats or mittens.
Students MUST have their own supplies.
Please label all winter gear clearly with your child’s first and last name.
This is so helpful in reuniting lost clothing with our students.
Let's Get Moooving!

Our Fuel Up Team encourages all walkers and runners to send in their miles for the past few months (if you have not already done so). Our school is currently at 629 miles and we need 1,000 by Feb. 1 to enter a statewide contest. All students will "Run the Halls" during the Catholic Schools Week but we need more! Parents, you may also count the miles you do on your own. Please direct these to Ms. Starks by e-mail or on a note. Thank-you!

Congratulations to Austin Rahill, our Director of Religious Education, and his wife, Melisa, who welcomed Benedict Michael to their family in December. Big brother Elijah, in first grade, is very proud!
