Family Prayer

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Isaiah 62:1-5

God rejoices over you.

  • The first reading from Isaiah compares the renewed city of Jerusalem to a radiant bride of the Lord.
  • The image of marriage was often used to describe God’s covenant relationship with the people.
  • In today’s passage, this image was designed to hearten the discouraged Jewish people as they attempted to rebuild their city.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

One Spirit gives different gifts to each.

  • In the second reading Paul reminds the Corinthians that they should use their spiritual gifts with order and reverence.
  • The gifts are from one Spirit and will build the Christian community into one body.
  • The presence and the generous sharing of these gifts are signs of the messianic age, the glorious wedding feast of God’s kingdom.

Gospel : John 2:1-11

Jesus’ first miracle at a wedding in Cana.

  • Today’s reading is the first miracle story in the Gospel of John.
  • Throughout John’s Gospel, Jesus’ “hour” referred to the combined moments of his passion, death, resurrection and ascension.
  • At the wedding in Cana, Jesus responds to his mother’s request by performing a miracle to symbolize that hour.

Catholic Schools Week January 26th thru February 1st

Catholic Schools Week is near. Catholic Schools Week is designed to celebrate all the great things happening in our Catholic schools. It starts with our open house on January 25th from 2:00-4:00. Students who wear their school uniform and help or participate in our Open House or Mass, will receive an out of uniform pass to be used in the month of February.

Our open house is a great opportunity to share all the great things happening at SJE with prospective families searching for the right spiritual and educational experience for their child. If you know anyone interested in finding a strong Catholic education for their child, please share the open house information with them.

STAR Testing

We will be completing STAR testing between January 20th and the 25th. It is a great opportunity for your child to show his or her academic growth in math and reading so far this year. Please help your child prepare by ensuring he or she gets enough rest and eats a good breakfast.

READING ROCKSTARS!!!!!

Each month students in grades 2-8 set reading goals. The class with the highest percentage of students reaching their goals receives the traveling trophy for the month. Our Reading Rockstars for December are the 8th graders. Great job, 8th grade!
