Third Sunday of Lent

Reading I :  Exodus 17:3-7

Is the Lord in our midst or not?
  • In the Exodus reading, the Israelites grumble about their experience in the desert.
  • Their thirst represents Israel’s real question, “Why did God make us leave Egypt?”
  • Yahweh responds graciously to the needs of the people.

Reading II :  Romans 5:1-2, 5-8

We are at peace with God through Christ.
  • The wonder of God’s free gift of salvation in Jesus is subject of the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans.
  • God responds to our need with compassion and mercy.
  • God’s love is poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Gospel :  John 4:5-42

Whoever drinks the water I give, will never thirst again.
  • In the story of the Samaritan woman, Jesus uses water as a symbol of God’s revelation and God’s Spirit.
  • The exchange between Jesus and the woman causes conversion to take place.
  • The woman identifies Jesus several times, each time with greater understanding. First, he was a Jewish man, then a prophet, and finally she makes a comment about the Messiah.
A Message from
Mrs. Laidlaw Otto

Dear SJE Families;

Earlier today, Governor Evers declared a public health emergency that provides additional resources for the state to address COVID-19.  COVID-19 cases are increasing throughout the United States and within Wisconsin. While Greenfield does not have a case at this moment, several laboratory tests that have been conducted, and we continue to monitor the situation.   In fact, today, we were notified that a parent of a student here at SJE had been tested for the virus.  Thankfully, this test came back negative.  The Health Department believes that Greenfield will eventually have cases of COVID-19, and the disease will continue to spread through our community over the coming weeks.  Our Greenfield Health Department continues to track the updates and provide us with the information we need to know. In addition, we receive regular information from the Archdiocese. As we receive updates, we will pass them along to you.

Right now, you need to know this:

  • We have several field trips planned in the upcoming weeks.  Our trip to the Wisconsin Youth Rally has been postponed. Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 should plan on coming to school in their uniforms tomorrow.  Our third and fourth grade walk to Our Lady of the Angels in April has been canceled.

  • We regularly clean and disinfect our building, particularly during the flu season. We have reviewed our procedures and feel confident that we are providing a clean environment for our students, staff members, and families.

  • We have policies in place for the exclusion of sick children and staff members.

Following these policies is the best practice in the prevention of the spread of all communicable diseases. They are as follows:

  • Students who are running a fever higher than 99.9 degrees will be excluded from class. We use a temporal forehead thermometer. Students must be fever free, without medication, for 24 hours, prior to returning to school.

  • Students with stomach bugs, including vomiting and/or diarrhea, should stay home until they have been symptom free for 24 hours. Please make sure that your child is able to eat a regular diet before sending them back to school as well.

  • Parents are asked to communicate, by phone or email, when a child will be out of school due to illness. A brief explanation as to the nature of the illness should be part of the phone call or email. This information is helpful in tracking what is “going around”. At the same time, we respect the privacy of families, and will not share personal information publicly.

  • We encourage our students to wash their hands; teach hygiene lessons in covering coughs and sneezes, and discourage sharing of snacks and clothing. These behaviors are important in curbing any contagious diseases.

Finally, if you desire updated information on this virus, we recommend that you check on the Centers for Disease Control website. This information is updated daily and covers a variety of scenarios. The link below will take you directly to the CDC website.

As always, please contact the school office if you have any questions or concerns.

Go Forth and Be a Blessing;

Mary Laidlaw Otto
We are happy to announce that Ms. Susan Borowski has joined our after-school staff. Working with children is a new experience for Sue, and she is thoroughly enjoying getting to know our students. Ms. Borowski is a graduate of St. John the Evangelist herself.

We are excited to welcome her back home!
Water To Thrive Update

Our Week 2 Water to Thrive Focus is the 5 min. Shower Challenge. Students and families are encouraged to pledge to shorten your shower time as we try to imagine what it might be like to have limited access to water. Time your running water time and try to decrease that time throughout the week.

Return the pledge card (posted in our Thursday envelope link) and we will post them in the gym hallway. After completing the challenge we will ask students to write about their experience.
Forward Test Update

Our third through eighth graders are exploring the Forward exam through the practice test tools. They are discovering that this test will challenge not only their knowledge, but also their ability to read and follow directions in new and different ways. You can help by providing time for your student to practice for the Forward Exam at home.
