Family Prayer

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Deuteronomy 6:2-6

Be blessed by keeping the Commandments.

  • Today Jews and Christians will speak with one voice, as we are graced with the same reading in our assemblies.
  • Israel considers the relationship with God to be as powerful as the bond between spouses or between parent and child.
  • The importance of the command is illustrated by the instructions of keeping it in one’s heart and mind.
  • Love is the obvious demand of the relationship.

Reading II : Hebrews 7:23-28

Jesus makes intercessions for us.

  • In the first covenant there were many priests offering many sacrifices, and they passed away.
  • The sacrifice of Jesus is the only sacrifice necessary in the new covenant.
  • The Father appoints Jesus as permanent high priest, who will never pass away.
  • What is true for us today will also be true for those who follow us.

Gospel : Mark 12:28b-34

Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.

  • This is a reaffirmation of the First Commandment.
  • In the synagogues the words are chanted with special tone, so that no one can miss them.
  • This is a proclamation, not a lesson.
  • Love is proclaimed again with Jesus’ New Commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves.

A Message from Mr. Obersdorf

Miraculous Medals

During the Monday morning prayer service, the students of Saint John’s learned about the Miraculous Medal.  They were told that in the year 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré and revealed the Miraculous Medal, also known as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception.  Mary appeared in the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, France, and stood on a globe with rays of light coming from her hands. The inscription "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee" surrounded her. Mary told Catherine to have a medal struck based on the vision. The reverse side of the medal features the letter "M" with a cross above it, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary below. Mary promised that those who wore the medal with faith would receive her protection and graces, especially if they wore it around their neck. She also said that those who prayed with devotion would be under her special protection. After having heard this story, the students of Saint John’s were overjoyed at being given Miraculous Medals, blessed by Father Michael.  They know that their Mother, Mary, loves them and is watching over them.  They lovingly display their medals daily, from the youngest to the oldest.  We thank God for the gift of His Mother and her intercession through the Miraculous Medal.  O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Over 30 families decorated their trunks and handed out candy. We had a photo booth thanks to our 5th grade teacher Mr. Payant and caramel apples and hot chocolate courtesy of our Home and School Committee. The smiles, laughter, costumes, trunk decorations, treats, and fun made it a great community event. To see pictures of the fun, please check out our Facebook page.

A huge thank you to Steve Jambor for maintaining our fields, preparing them for play, and helping with cleanup after the season.

Thank you to Lauren Zidek, parent coordinator, for collecting physicals.

A big shout out to our concession stand supervisors Betty Schmidt, Cassandra Wagner, Judith Phillips, Denelle Bartoshevich, Ashley Pitcher, and James Pitcher for all of their hard work and dedication throughout the season. There was always at least one concession stand supervisor on the grounds for each game played. The supervisors were also there before and after games each day for setup and cleanup. You are awesome!

Thank you to anyone who helped our soccer season be a success. It takes many volunteers to make our soccer and volleyball seasons happen. There were many hours to cover in the concession stand and many of you stepped up to help out. I am sure I am probably missing some big thank yous but please know whatever you did, no matter how big or small, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
