Gospel Reading for Sunday, February 10th, 2019

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Living Our Vocation

Luke 5:1-11
  • What happened when Simon lowered the nets?
  • What do you think Jesus meant when he said, “You will be catching men.”?
  • What are some ways we can proclaim God’s love?
Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.
A Note from the Principal:
Dear SJE Parents,

In spite of our struggles with the Polar Vortex, we managed to enjoy our Catholic Schools activities. They were spread out over a two-week period, and our students had to exercise plenty of patience, but we found time to celebrate our faith, families, and each other. After nearly a week off of school, we discovered that we miss each other when we are home, especially when it is too cold out to play in the snow. Even the most reluctant of our students returned with smiles, ready to get down to work.
I am blessed (or perhaps cursed) with the ability to work from home. When I wasn't watching the weather reports, I was able to catch up on some of the paperwork that seems to continually pile up. I, however, also missed my friends.  Interacting with our students is definitely the most rewarding part of my job.  I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had worked in an environment without children. I can’t even imagine days without the opportunity to see life through the eyes of a child. Our children are our greatest blessing. Every moment spent rescheduling, juggling meeting dates and times, and worrying about the weather is worth it.   We are all “saints in the making”. Our staff members are blessed to have a small role in helping to form your small saints.

Growing in God’s love,

Mary Laidlaw Otto

Over the past couple of weeks, we have offered a variety of activities for our children as well as for our families. Beginning with our Catholic Schools’ Week Open House and Spaghetti Dinner, continuing through our Small Plates Big Hearts event last weekend, and on through our rescheduled Catholic Schools Week school events, various members of our school and parish communities spent countless hours planning, cooking, setting up and tearing down. There is nowhere near enough room in this newsletter to list all of the volunteers who work to make all of these events a success. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of any of these events. Our volunteers make our community strong and successful, and we are so grateful to all of them!

Included in today’s paper envelope is the latest edition of Catholic Herald Family Magazine.

Early Childhood Open House

Do you have a child entering K3, K4, or K5? Do you have a friend or relative with children who are ready to begin their school experience? Our annual Early Childhood Open House will be held next Wednesday, February 13 th , beginning at 6:30 PM. We will gather in our K4 classroom, just inside of our main school entrance, located off of 86th and Coldspring Road.
Whether you have a child who will be entering K3, K4, or K5, this program will benefit you. Rebecca Heise, our K4 educator, and Jessica Schein, our K5 educator, will be on hand ready to present you with an overview of our early childhood program. This overview will include a sample daily schedule, examples of unit organization and topics covered, and an overview of the Archdiocesan early Childhood curriculum, based in the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards. In addition, we will have copies of the curriculum and sample evaluation tools available for your review.

Becky and Jessica will also provide hints on preparing your child for a successful early childhood experience, and will answer any questions that you have about our program.

Please RSVP for this program, in order to ensure that there are handouts available for all participants: 414-321-8540 or

Enrollment Update
Re-enrollment paperwork for the 2019-2020 school year is included in today’s paper envelope. The cover letter will guide you through our tuition payment options. Please take time to read it carefully.  Please note that all families must complete and return the registration paperwork, even if they will be enrolling their student utilizing Parental Choice Program funds. Enrollment is not complete for any student until we have the completed registration paperwork.  I am happy to answer any questions which are not covered in the information sent home today. Please call the school office at 321-8540 to schedule a time to speak with me if you have further questions.

The difference between the current tuition rate and the rate for 2019-2020 is two percent.   After last year’s tuition freeze, this increase was necessary for a number of reasons. It allows us to address the inevitable increase in insurance costs, as well as costs for services and materials required to run a school. While any increase is a significant one, we will still remain one of the most affordable options among the Catholic schools in our area. It is always the goal of our Parish Finance Committee to keep tuition as low as possible without sacrificing the quality education available in our school. We believe that with these numbers, and your continued support, we can continue to offer exemplary academic programming and the same strong Catholic values that are important to all of us.

The Flu is Here!
The extremely cold weather seems to have left us with the stomach flu. Parents are asked to keep students home with symptoms including diarrhea or vomiting. The students need to stay home until they have been symptom free, without medication, for 24 hours. Students recovering from a stomach virus should also be able to eat normally.

Similarly, families are asked to keep students home if they are exhibiting symptoms of influenza including headache, body aches, sore throat, and fever. Students will be sent home from school if their fever is over 100°, or if they are exhibiting significant discomfort at school. We ask that you help to keep our students and teachers healthy by keeping your child home from school until they have been fever free, without medication, for 24 hours.

We take special precautions to keep our school clean by disinfecting bathrooms, water fountains, and high traffic areas of the classrooms and hallways. You can help by keeping your sick children home until they are feeling ready for the challenges of school.
