First Sunday in Advent

Be Vigilant

Questions for Family Discussion:

  • What church season is starting?
  • Who are we waiting for?
  • What can we do to grow closer to Jesus while we wait?

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.
A Note from the Principal:

Dear SJE Parents,

Educators today often talk about setting goals with students. We call our daily classroom goals learning targets and we know that these are the things which create the focus for the day. When I visit a classroom, I will often ask students to explain what they are learning about. In this way, I ensure that not only has the teacher set a goal or learning target, but that the students are aware of the outcome. This practice sets our students up for success. It helps them to think critically about the materials being explored, with an eye on what they will master in the end.

Our teachers also set professional learning goals. These annual goals help to guide them as they work to become better educators, ultimately benefiting our students.

As we begin our new trimester, our families also have an opportunity to set goals with their children. I am asking our families to consider the following goals as we head into the second trimester of the year.

Take time to discuss your child’s day with them.  Dinner is an excellent time to hear the stories of everyone’s day. The benefits to children from this type of sharing are countless!

If your child is in second grade or above, check their assignment notebook every single school day.   If your child is in fifth through eighth grade, you should be checking their honor card and PowerSchool at least weekly, but a daily peek at the assignment notebook will provide valuable insight into your child’s growing organizational abilities.

If you struggle to get your child to school before our 7:45 tardy bell, leave 10 minutes earlier . Too many of our students are late to school nearly every single day. Students who come in late, or moments before the tardy bell, are missing time to unpack and organize, review what their day will look like, and talk with friends before the work of the day begins. Arriving to school between 7:30 and 7:40 ensures a calm start to the day, helping to set the stage for success throughout the day!

Advent Update

Advent begins this weekend. Here at school, our Monday morning prayer services will take on a slightly different look. We light an Advent wreath and take a few moments before we begin our busy days to pray together. Our Fruit of the Holy Spirit for December is Joy. We will be focusing on Jesus, Others, Yourself. Each student and staff member in our school has been assigned a  prayer buddy.   We will provide activities and prompts to help students remember these buddies in prayer throughout the Advent season.   We   will place reminders of our prayers in folders in our front hallway. What a wonderful way to bring the Joy of the Advent season alive. This activity reminds us of our Advent promise to live out our school theme: “Growing in God’s Love”.   At this time of year, our greatest challenge is to take time during our busy days to pray and to enjoy the lesson in patience that Advent provides. What an amazing opportunity for growth for all members of our community!
Cookie Walk
Your help is needed to make our second annual SJE Home and School Cookie Walk a success. Each family is asked to donate at least one (two or three would be wonderful) batch of cookies or bars to be sold at weekend masses on December 15th and 16th.

Thank you to all families who have already committed to bake cookies for our cookie walk.  So far, we have pledges for 900 cookies! In order to make our cookie walk a success, we need at least 1,500 cookies. Please keep those donation commitments coming!
The more cookies you donate, the more money that will be raised by our Home and School. Cookie Walk proceeds will be used to fund family activities provided by our Home and School.

A sign-up sheet is available in this week’s electronic folder. Please complete the sheet and return it to the school office by Monday December 10th, letting us know how many cookies or bars you will be able to provide. All cookies should be delivered to the school office on Friday morning, December 14th.
