Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Thank God for the good things he does for you.
  • The story from the Second Book of Kings is part of the Elijah-Elisha cycle of prophetic legends.
  • When Naaman came to Elisha to request a cure, Elisha sent him to wash seven times in the Jordan River.
  • Naaman's physical cure becomes the basis of faith in the God of Israel.

Reading II :  2 Timothy 2:8-13
There is no chaining the word of God!
  • Today's reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy continues the series of exhortations for ministers of the gospel.
  • Those who suffer hardships with Christ and for him, who die and are faithful to the end with him, will live with Christ in the kingdom.
  • This letter stresses the rewards and punishments for service and failure.

Gospel :  Luke 17:11-19
Be grateful.
  • The Gospel reading today tells the story of a healing.
  • The ingratitude of the other lepers is a surprising account, but the fact that the one grateful returnee was a Samaritan was possibly more shocking at the time.
  • The Samaritan is not only healed, he is also saved through wholeness and a proper relationship to God.

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday readings together as a family. These conversation starters will help to prepare your children for weekly mass.
A Message from
Mrs. Laidlaw Otto

Dear SJE Families;

Fall is certainly here! Cool mornings followed by warm, sunny afternoons are an amazing gift prior to winter.

We have three exciting events coming up. The first is our Living Rosary. Our students will gather in church to pray the rosary together on Thursday, October 24th, at 2:00 PM. Families are invited to join us to pray and honor our Blessed Mother.

Today’s Thursday envelope contains the sign-up sheet for our popular Trunk or Treat event. This event will be held on Friday, October 25th. Remember – the success of this event depends upon our families who decorate their trunks and pass out treats. Please consider not only bringing your ghosts and goblins to this event, but also supporting us with a trunk full of goodies.

Nearly half of our families have already responded to our invitation for VIP day on November 1st. Please consider joining us for a celebration of All Saint’s Day, followed by a traditional turkey dinner and entertainment.  Here is the flyer . Families will not want to miss this event!   This year, we are challenging all our students to follow the lead of our third graders and dress up as a Saint for our All Saint’s Day mass. Find some inspiration here . Classes with 100% participation in this wonderful SJE tradition will be rewarded with Krispy Kreme donuts!!

Go forth and be a blessing,

Mary Laidlaw Otto
Art to Remember

Art to Remember Orders are due into the school office no later than Monday, October 14th.  These items make great Christmas gifts for family members. Order by October 14th to be guaranteed delivery in time for Christmas.

Standards-Based Teaching, Learning, and Grading Update

One of the greatest challenges we face is communication about learning progress with our families. All our families are provided with a login for PowerSchool when their child enters first grade. We recommend that, when your child enters fifth grade, you begin to check PowerSchool once every week. Reviewing progress with your student is an excellent way to open up a discussion about learning.

Looking at PowerSchool for your child’s grades in our standards-based environment is slightly different than before. The steps are as follows:

Log into PowerSchool with your unique family login. You can access PowerSchool at:

We are not able to reset family passwords here at school. If you have forgotten your login or password, you can easily reset it from the login page. Once you are logged in on the PowerSchool site follow these steps:

  1. Click on the name of one of your students (they are listed across the top of the page).
  2. Two tabs will appear. You may choose the “Grades and Attendance” tab for details about all assignments which have been collected. Choosing the “Standards Grades” tab will provide an overview of your child’s current grade on each standard.

Grades and Attendance:

  1. Choose the subject for which you want to check the grades.
  2. Under that subject, scroll under the “T1” tab.
  3. Click on this symbol under the T1 tab: [i]
  4. This will provide you with a list of assignments completed and entered into PowerSchool. Remember: formative assignments are practice, and while they may be entered into PowerSchool, they are not part of your child’s final grade.
  5. To look at the details for an assignment, click on the blue icon under the assignment column. This tab will take you to a detail page showing the standards included in the assignment and your child’s score on each standard.

        Standards Grades:
  1. To view your child’s overall standard grades in a subject, just click on the “expand all” tab on the top right of the screen. (please note that the top subject will be “homeroom”. This section is used to take attendance and will never have a grade entered under it.

Many of our parents have been using the app on their cell phones to review grades on PowerSchool. Please note that the app is not optimized for standards-based grading. We recommend that you view your child’s progress using a traditional PC or laptop.

Please consider joining us on Tuesday, October 15 th , from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, for an informational meeting on standards-based teaching, learning, and grading. This meeting is geared for parents of students in grades four through eight, but all are welcome to attend. In order to ensure that there are enough handouts available, please RSVP for the meeting to principal@sje.k12.wi.us.
Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

Our mid-trimester conferences will be held next Thursday. Parents are being notified today via your paper Thursday envelope as to your conference time(s).

Please note that students will be dismissed on Thursday, October 17 th   at 11 AM, and that there will be no school on Friday, October 18 th .

Students in K4 and K5 will receive their first narrative report cards in January, and will have conferences along with our other students at that time.
Growing Gardeners Program

Today's paper envelope contains your second set of seeds - more herbs for your kitchen garden. Congratulations to the Kelly and Leshok Families! They sent great pictures of their kids planting and are winners for September. For October, send us a picture of your herb garden and you could also be a winner! Pictures must be submitted to jehrmann@sje.k12.wi.us by October 24th.

Thank you to Thrivent Financial, Steins, Milaeger's and Target for their help with this program!
Cousins Sub Day
Thursday, October 17

Grab a quick bite to eat before or after your conferences. Cousins Subs, 7495 W. Layton Ave., will donate a portion of all sales to SJE School on Thursday, October 17. Support our school and an amazing community partner by stopping in for lunch or dinner.

Cousins Scrip cards are available in the Parish Office during regular business hours or during SCRIP sale weekends.

A Public Square Fatima Rosary Rally, in conjunction with over 21,145 other Public Rosary Rallies across America sponsored by America Needs Fatima, will be held on Saturday, October 12th, from noon to 1:00 PM. Please mark your calendar to join us to pray a public Rosary on the sidewalk on 84th Street by the SJE driveway alongside the soccer field. Bring along a lawn chair if you prefer to sit during the Rosary. Bring your family and friends! Your continuing prayers for our country are desperately needed.
